What specifications and features in a mounteering backpack?
If each mountaineering backpack has its own properties and unique specs, there are a bunch of common features that can help compare them. Very compact with an optimised storage capacity, they are designed to let you access your gear very quickly and very easily without getting in the way of your harness. They generally feature padded shoulder straps and load adjuster straps to remain comfortable despite the weight on your back. Of course, every model comes with its own features suited for specific mountaineering practices.
How to choose the right mountaineering backpack?
On Glisshop, you'll find a variety of mountaineering bags suited for different needs.
Considering Glisshop is an expert ski and snowboard retailer, we obviously have bags with skis and snowboards carry systems like the Deuter Freerider or the Guide Team by Evoc. They are a great match for skiers and snowboarders looking for new off-piste ventures or thrills on powdery ridges, couloirs and powder fields.
If you feel more comfortable on your feet than on skis or on a snowboard, if you climb for the sake of challenging yourself or just for the beauty of nature, then we definitely have the right stuff for you. Rucksacks like the Salomon Peak or the Scott Pack Mountain are suited for hardcore mountaineers.
Then, depending on the duration of your sessions and on their intensity, we offer backpacks with variable storage capacities. They'll allow you to carry what you need and to organize it to save space and weight. From the compact 15L bag to the generous 45+ L models, everyone should find his match.
The Deuter Guide backpack can store up to 50L thanks to its expandable 8L volume. It's a great choice for those who like to to hike and stay out for several days.
What are the important features you want to consider on a mountaineering backpack?
Ice axe holders:
These systems are generally located at the back of the bag and can hold 1 or 2 ice axes easily, which you can access quickly. Systems can vary a little from a brand to another, but basically, you'll attach your axe upside down with the pick in the middle of the bag. The most simple systems integrate a loop for the head and a strap for the handle. More advanced options also offer a pick protector. This not only helps avoiding injuries but it also prevents your blade from wearing out too fast.
Gear loops:
A few packs feature these loops on the belt strap. They offer added room for your gear, on top of your harness', to help you re-distribute weight or carry more gear more comfortably.
Haul loops
Sometimes, it's safer to climb with as little weight as possible on your shoulders. This means you may have to leave your backpack, climb, and haul it up. To help you with that, some bags feature haul loops. They are ultra strong and reinforced.
