Man's Nordic ski gloves buying guide:
The main role of a Nordic ski glove is to protect your hands from cold and bad weather. However, in Nordic skiing, the brands have faced some constraints involved in the activity, especially gripping. In effect, it is not possible to have thick gloves because they make it difficult to grip the pole and so reduce the effectiveness of the arms' thrust. So the brands have used materials such as Lycra, leather and Gore-Tex to properly insulate the gloves while keeping them as thin as possible.
What are the different types of cross-country ski gloves available?
First there is the traditional ski glove with 5 separate fingers. Its biggest advantage is to offer an impeccable grip. It is used in competition or when the temperature is mild. But in fact, because the 5 fingers are separate, this gives rise to a loss in thermal insulation. However gloves with five fingers allow you to firmly hold the pole and handle the rifle and different accessories easily.
There are also standard gloves with a removable cover that makes them into mittens. This cover can be taken off whenever you want. It's the perfect compromise between ski gloves and ski mittens. They help maintain an excellent grip and convert to mittens when the weather deteriorates and temperatures fall.
People with sensitive hands will be delighted by three finger gloves. They revisit the idea of a mitten by putting several fingers in the covering. They also help to maintain some grip even if it is a little less than standard gloves. But don't forget that their main asset is to limit the appearance of chilblains.
What kind of Nordic ski glove to choose, then?
It all depends on your activity level. If you are a competitor it is best to choose a 5-finger glove. In competition grip is important, and in addition the heat generated by a body being used at high intensity will be sufficient for you not to feel cold. On the other hand, if you do low-intensity Nordic skiing, or you prefer to stroll along the tracks, then mittens or three finger gloves are recommended. They will keep your hands warm even though they are not doing much.
