Buyer’s guide for Nordic ski skating bindings
Choosing a skating binding for cross-country skiing should be done carefully. The binding is the link between you and your skis, and you should choose one which best suits your level of experience and your reasons for wanting to ski. So that everyone can get the most out of Nordic skiing, Simon Fourcade Nørdic has put together some advice for you in this buying guide.
What is a Nordic ski skating binding?
The binding is what connects you to your skis. It attaches the boot to the ski by the tip of the foot while allowing the heel to move freely, a crucial movement in Nordic skiing. The Skating technique requires lateral support and axial movements must therefore be limited. This is why the skating bindings are much stiffer than the classic ones.
Choose your skating binding according to your level of experience.
There is a binding for every level of experience. Some will give you greater accuracy and will improve lateral coasting while others will be safer and easier to use. Make sure you properly assess your level and your reasons for wanting to ski so that you can make the right choice according to your needs. On each binding you will find some instructions to help you make the best decision. And if you're still not sure, don't hesitate to call an adviser who will be happy to help you.
Are skating bindings and Nordic ski boots compatible?
In Nordic skiing, there are several binding norms and boot norms, not all of which are compatible with each other. To avoid buying a binding that does not fit your boots, make sure you check the norms.
- If there's only one clip under your boots, you'll be skiing using the NNN or Prolink norm. Your boots will be compatible with the skating bindings of both norms.
- If there are two clips, then your boots will only be compatible with the SNS Pilot norm.
Be careful not to mix them up. Norm does not mean brand, and some brands like Salomon offer both norms, SNS Pilot and Prolink.
