Alpine Ski Armada Magic J

Better sit down before reading the following. This is Armada's Magic J, a fat (not to say ultra fat) ski designed holy powder days when it's been dumping so much that snowcats couldn't even groom the trails. It is wide and wild, made for surfing powder and nothing else. How wide? Half a snowboard. Yup, 125mm at the waist in 180cm, the Magic J is a beast. Add to it oversized tip and tail rockers to keep you afloat and steer through the deep with ease and you get the ultimate backcountry weapon for shredding, stomping and slashing.

What can the Armada Magic J ski do?

Right, let's get this straight. The Magic J is not a carver, it is not a ski you'll take for goofing groomers. Its rockers, its width and its 20m turning radius compromise stability on hard snow and make the ski a bit bulky. It is not impossible to lay clean turns on piste but you do need skills to do so. The ski's favourite playground is obviously the backside of the mountain, where the snow is deep and where there are no tracks. It is the perfect ski for riding in legendary spots like Mammoth mountain or Baldface Lodge or for hitting the bottomless snow in Japan. The Magic J completely re-defines floatation and buoyancy, a good reminder of laws of physics, and it's a great toy for sending the most incredible tricks off natural booters.

Who is the Armada Magic J ski designed for?

Oversized ski for riders with oversized ambitions. If your technique is flawless, if your legs are strong and if you are looking for a powder-specific ski to get your freestyle game up a notch in the backcountry, then the Magic J belongs to your quiver.

What are the main assets of the Armada Magic J ski?

Playful twin profile

Type of turns

  • Long turns

  • Bidirectional (twin tip)  :

The ski shape allows to ski forward or backward.

Structure - Construction

  • AR50 Sidewalls  :

ABS sidewall meets cap construction – the best of both worlds. This engineering method combines the lightweight cap construction in the tip and tail with ABS sidewall underfoot, resulting in enhanced edgehold and significantly lower swing and overall weight.

  • Ultralight Core  :

A combination of lightweight woods throughout and hardwood laminates underfoot, the Hybrid Ultra-lite Core created the ultimate in agility and maneuverability without sacrificing any security or dampness underfoot.

  • Laminate matrix  :

We know from the core out exactly how each ski should react, so three kinds of fiberglass laminates are used in combination to deliver the exact amount of flex and torsional rigidity. Bi-axial fiberglass runs in an “x” pattern down the ski to control lateral flex. Uni-directional fiberglass controls flex along the length of the ski. And tri-axial fiberglass, with fibers running in three directions, beefs up the center of the ski. The permutations of the three fiberglasses are nearly limitless and allow us to precision tune the performance of every ski we make.

Camber type

  • Classic camber  :

When the ski sits flat on the ground, the tip and the tail are in contact with it while the midsection rises above. It is this section that maximises the energy transmission towards the edge, ideal for piste skiing. It also provides a rebound which enhances energy return and pop.

  • EST Freeride Rocker  :

Rockered tip and tail combined to a positive camber under the foot for a better floatation on soft snow and a better edge hold.

Rocker type

  • Tip and tail rocker  :

Full length rocker perfect for surfing powder. It floats easily and ensures smooth and effortless turns. Landings are easier too.

  • 50/50 Base  :

As the name implies, the 50/50 is faster than the S7 and more rugged than the Comp Series.

  • 1.7 impact edge  :

The edge height and width is deliberately smaller and the steel is heat-treated to a proprietary hardness to increase durability and decrease weight

Binding technologies

  • Triple Pivot Elite Toe  :

The toe construction with DIN/ISO up to Z 18 allows for impressive retention when freeriding. The spring in the toe is inserted horizontally and with a sole plate inclined by 5° it provides the highest energy absorption so as to reduce the risk of early release. The large supporting surface optimizes the power transmission and allows for great stresses and strains. In relation to their weight, toes with this technology therefore achieve a never-seen-before performance.

  • Anti Friction Device AFD  :

All Marker bindings are equipped with a moveable AFD (anti friction device) and therefore guarantee a highly precise release almost entirely unhindered by dirt, snow and ice! Individual adjustment of the AFD to the area of application ensures perfect functionality - from racing, for children’s bindings or on ski tours.

  • Inter-Pivot Heel  :

The stunning heel construction delivers superior holding power for free riding, featuring DIN/ISO 6-16. The Inter Pivot Heel directs the power forces in the angle of elasticity improving the holding power and reducing pre-releases.
