Alpine Ski Fischer Ranger 98 TI

Fischer is updating its freeride lineup. The Ranger skis return with a wider waist to provide added floatability on powder. This is excellent news for all skiers who like to ride past the ropes.

What can the Fischer Ranger 98 Ti do?

The 98 Ti is the high-end ski of the Ranger series. Boasting a 98mm waist instead of 96mm on its previous version, the ski delivers more freeride performance and it is definitely oriented towards powder. All it needs to be happy is a thick coat of fresh snow. Featuring the Air Tec Ti technology incorporating a titanal reinforced hollowed woodcore, the ski is lighter and yet performs harder. It is light enough to welcome a touring setup and assault every peaks you can reach in the resort. Don’t get us wrong though, it is not the best touring ski ever (simply cause it’s not a touring ski but a freeride one), however, it does excel on the downhill and charges the slopes with style and ease. It delivers solid stability on crud and chopped powder and slashes turns with elegance. If we had to find it one weakness (although most testers said it had none), we’d pick the performance on groomed snow. Being wide, the ski feels less precise and a little less responsive. At high speed the carbon tip tends to chatter a bit. But if you buy the ski, it’s not for racing on piste is it? In the end, this freeride ski met all of our expectations and we happily recommend it.

Who is the Fischer Ranger 98 Ti designed for?

The Ranger 98 Ti is a good choice for intermediate and advanced skiers who like to ride hard and fast on powder and who look for a responsive pair of skis. It’s also a good option for tourers looking for a light and powerful ski to skin up with.

What are the main assets of the Fischer Ranger 98 Ti?

Type of turns

  • Long turns

Shape

  • Directional (front tip)  :

The ski shape allows only a directional use.

Weight of the pair in grams

  • 3690gr en 180cm

Structure - Construction

  • Aeroshape  :

Specific construction, ultra light for optimal torsional stability

  • Air Tec Ti  :

The wood core Air Tec was minutely milled and unbalanced, what allowed to relieve it of 25 % while keeping its excellent properties. A titanal layer allied to this core allows to preserve flex and stifness in twisting.

  • Carbon Nose  :

Thin tip featuring a layer of carbon enhancing both agility and stability.

Camber type

  • Classic camber  :

When the ski sits flat on the ground, the tip and the tail are in contact with it while the midsection rises above. It is this section that maximises the energy transmission towards the edge, ideal for piste skiing. It also provides a rebound which enhances energy return and pop.

Rocker type

  • Freeski Rocker  :

The length of the ski/snow contact surface has been shortened for easier turn initiations and less efforts required.

The reviews were pretty accurate - good on and off piste, float nicely in soft and heavy powder. Some chatter at higher speeds on piste - hold their edges well but certainly not as stable as a slalom ski
