How to choose your Rossignol skis?

The Hero Range, for elite slalom skiers

The glory times of the Radical series is over, but the racing isn’t at Rossignol, quite the opposite actually. A new series shows up instead, an impressive one called Hero and derived in three versions, FIS, Master and Elite. They all come with their lot of new techs including the Prop Tech: an upper reinforcement layer of Zicral that maximises energy transfers and enhances manoeuvrability. The idea is to make turn initiations more precise without compromising forgiveness.

Since 2013, the International Ski Federation (FIS) has established new norms about the ski radii in competition series. This is why Rossignol worked on the cosmetics of their skis so they express very clearly their radius (on FIS and Master Hero series). The Elite series carries mentions like LT (Long Turn, radius over 15 meters) and ST (Short Turns, radius under 15 meters).

Rossignol skis

If the ski length (along with the radius) is clearly different from a ST version (shorter) to a LT version (longer), the Hero Elite sidecuts don’t vary that much. Waists size from 68 to 72mm, which isn’t a big gap. However, their construction shows some variations: Minicap sandwich structures are featured on all skis, so is the profile with 90% of camber and 10% of rocker, but the core reinforcements are built differently. The Elite series comes with fibreglass on LT, SX and ST versions, with carbon on Elite SX Carbon, and with titanal on Elite ST-Racing, Elite LT-Racing, Elite ST-Ti and Elite LT-Ti. Each material has its own specific properties, torsional stiffness, responsiveness, stability...making each ski different and able to handle more or less speed.

FIS and Master skis have waists from 67mm to 70mm on adult models (64 and 65mm on junior skis) and come with a sandwich construction and a titanal reinforced woodcore. The idea is to offer skis that can handle any conditions with ease and deliver high performance at high speed. Special mention for the Hero FIS GS and its 35m turning radius...an impressive beast.

With this new Hero series, we could say Rossignol is going for high quality. These little gems remain super manoeuvrable even at high speed and shall make the expert racers happy.

Rossignol Experience ski range, for all-mountain skiing

Comparable to Dynastar and their Powertrack series which is a blend of the Chrome series and the Cham series, Rossignol releases a mix of the 7-series with the Hero series, called the Experience series, suited for all-mountain skiing.

The lineup includes 8 models featuring versatile sidecuts and waists widths at 76, 80, 82 and 86 mm. There are three types of construction used, Cap construction, Minicap and Maxicap and different cores as well, all made of wood but some are reinforced with titanal or basalt and feature technologies inspired from racing and freeride skis.

For instance, all skis come with the Air Tip technology, technology that made the success of the 7 series by the way. The tip and tail are built with a honeycomb structure which reduces weight dramatically. The idea is to enhance floatation without compromising torsional stiffness. Plus, the weight of the ski being in its centre, it allows skiers to control it better and maximise performance.

The Blackops freeride range

Amateurs of fresh, dry and deep snow will find what they like with Rossignol’s Blackops range. These pairs of sticks are built for freeriding. The French brand offers amazing floatability on white gold to all backcountry enthusiasts.

For men, they offer every freerider a waist width adapted to any need. The Blackops 98 offers great manoeuvrability and versatility. The Blackops 118 is the widest model in the entire range. Thanks to an explosive poplar wood core construction, you’ll enjoy exceptional rebound and great stability when landing. A true gem that will show its full potential on deep days.

Don’t worry ladies, Rossignol has got you covered. Blackops W skis in 92, 98 or 118 mm offer the same level of performance as men’s versions. Floatability, explosivity and control are on the menu this winter.

Piste skis for men and women

For those looking to venture on every groomed run in the ski area, Rossignol offers multiple collections of skis dedicated to groomed snow. In the Forza and Nova lines, you’ll find recreational models that are easy to control on any slope. These skis match very well with ski boots from the same brand for perfect everyday comfort. For thrill seekers, have a look at the stiffer model from the same Forza or Nova ranges, for better support and more dynamism. Pure fun in all cases!

Rossignol skis for young skiers

Children too have the right to dedicated skis! With the Hero and Experience ranges in junior versions, aspiring champions can have fun and progress at a fast pace. There's something for everyone, from young beginners to little racers looking for a powerful model. The Hero skis are designed for kids with solid skills. On the other hand, the Experience line is perfect to discover skiing with confidence inspiring and comfortable models.

Tips from Glisshop

How to choose your pair of Rossignol skis?

Choosing your pair of skis requires to identify your needs. Alpine, racing, touring, freestyle or freeride, skiing encompasses a wide range of disciplines. For each one, skis are designed differently to let you express your full potential. Glisshop’s expert are available to advise you. In the shop or by phone, they’ll have the right answers and will accompany you through your buying process!

Choosing the right ski length

Alpine skiing

We can identify two alpine skiing disciplines. Each with its own characteristics and requiring the right ski. Recreational skiers need a manoeuvrable, soft and forgiving ski, 5 to 15 cm shorter that the skier’s height, to learn and progress smoothly. The better you get, the longer the skis can be. When confident and able to ski faster, skiers need more stability, and therefore, more length.

Sport/racing-oriented alpine skis can be divided into two categories. Slalom requires a short and lively ski, to link short turns fast. Meaning you need a ski 15 to 20 cm shorter than you. On the other hand, Super-G skiers who perform large turns at high speeds will prefer a ski as long as their height to enjoy maximum stability when cornering.

Freeride skiing

Freeriders spend most of their time on virgin backcountry snow. They need lots of floatability to stay on top, as well as substantial length, 5 to 15 cm longer than the skier’s height. The waist width (in the middle of the ski) is another key element that influences the skiability. A freeride ski between 90 to 100 mm remains manoeuvrable on harder snow, when the conditions don’t allow to ski off-piste but has more limited abilities on deeper conditions. On the contrary, a 110 to 120 mm ski is your best ally in epic conditions but is harder to handle on groomed snow.

Freestyle skiing

Finally, we identify two categories of freestyle skis, park and backcountry, each with sub-categories. To make things clear, Glisshop has created a complete guide to help you choose the length of your freestyle skis.
