Dynafit ski touring and backcountry bindings
Thanks its unique experience in pin bindings dating back to the 80s, Dynafit offers multiple types of bindings handmade in Germany. Since 2015 some Dynafit bindings meet the TUV standard that guarantees active release of the boot for a level of safety similar to alpine bindings in descending mode. This technical expertise allows the brand to offer the ‘Lifetime Guarantee’: a 10-year guarantee on any material and manufacturing defect.
Dynafit low tech bindings
As safe as they’re versatile, Dynafit traditional bindings allow you to start ski touring with peace of mind. Their weight is reasonable (560 grams for a Backlight without brake for instance). They’re efficient and their Din settings range from 5 to 12. They guarantee good stability in the descents and adapt easily to all ski touring boots thanks to a large longitudinal adjustment range.
Dynafit Speed Turn and St Radical bindings
The Speed Turn is a reliable, lightweight, and affordable model. A true best-selling model for the brand, this ski touring binding is aimed at a wide range of all-round skiers. Building on the DNA and expertise of the Dynafit TLT Speed. It weighs only 700 grams a pair and has a simpler design than the Speed Radical. While the latter allows to action the heel lifts with your pole easily, the Speed Turn requires you to bend down. The Radical binding also features guides on the sides to make it easier to clip in.
Light touring Dynafit bindings
270 grams a pair: here’s what the Low Tech Race binding has to offer. Needless to say, that with such a lightweight equipment mounted on the right skis, you’ll fly up the mountain like never before. The ideal kind of binding for racers and ski mountaineering enthusiasts seeking the best ski touring gear.
What are the adjustments possible on Dynafit bindings?
Most Dynafit bindings can be adjusted in two ways: a longitudinal setting and Din setting.
The longitudinal setting enables to adapt the binding to the boot length. Be aware that this setting is more limited than on traditional alpine bindings. For instance, the Speed Turn can be adjusted of up to 12.5 mm. This means that you must know the boots you’ll use before installing the bindings on the skis. The same applies when buying second hand, check the boot size of the previous owner or you might have to remove and reinstall the bindings.
The Din setting indicates the touring binding’s release value in the advent of a fall when descending. The higher the Din, the more force is required to release.
Which Dynafit binding for all-mountain touring? How to make the right choice?
To make the right choice, you first need to define your discipline and skill level. If you’re a beginner, you can opt for an all-round Dynafit binding such as the Speed Turn or Speed Radical. If you’re seeking maximum safety regarding boot release, check out the TUV certified Dynafit St bindings. If you’re into racing and ultra-fast ascents, try the Low Tech Race or Superlite 175.
How to mount Dynafit bindings on your skis?
The installation of the binding on the touring ski is a delicate step, better left to experienced enthusiasts. The heel piece is first mounted at the right place, before drilling the ski at a specific diameter and depth. Then, both pieces are screwed/glued in the right spot. At Glisshop, this operation is meticulously done with specific tooling and drilling templates. It’s best to rely on a professional to make sure your bindings are perfectly centred and anchored in the ski.
When you’ve chosen the binding, don’t forget to select the right Dynafit crampons for your ski’s width. A piece of equipment to carry in your pack on all your outings.
