What is a climbing lanyard used for?
A climbing lanyard is an essential piece of gear for outdoor climbing, especially on crags. It plays a crucial role in ensuring safety during various climbing manoeuvres.
Here are the different uses of a climbing lanyard:
- Securing yourself to an anchor point for rest breaks
- Providing safety at the belay station while setting up the next pitch or when belaying the second climber on multi-pitch routes
- Enabling abseiling with the descender attached to one of the strands
- Working hands-free with a tether
- Resting on a via ferrata
- Using a via ferrata pulley for traversing a zipline
Key difference between Dyneema slings and dynamic lanyards
For safety reasons, it’s vital to distinguish between a dynamic lanyard made from climbing rope and a static Dyneema sling. A dynamic lanyard absorbs shocks during a fall, while a Dyneema sling lacks shock absorption and cannot withstand a factor 2—or even a factor 1—fall. More details in this ENSA study
Therefore, it is essential to use climbing rope for a robust lanyard. Dyneema slings can be used to connect anchor points, provided they are properly equalized to prevent direct shock to the sling in the event of a fall.
Note: A dynamic climbing lanyard is not suitable for via ferrata. The energy absorption provided by a climbing lanyard is insufficient for handling falls on a via ferrata. For via ferrata, you must use a via ferrata lanyard with an built-in shock absorber.
Single Lanyard: The Minimum for Sport Climbing
The single lanyard is the most affordable option available. It features a single strand of dynamic rope with a fixed length, typically short. One end has an industrially sewn loop for maximum durability, allowing you to tie a lark’s head knot to the two loops of your harness belay loop. The other end includes another loop that accommodates a screw-lock carabiner or an auto-lock carabiner.
Double Lanyard: Essential for Multi-Pitch Climbing
The double lanyard builds on the concept of the single lanyard but features two strands of different lengths to adapt to various situations. Typically, it’s more convenient to secure yourself at the belay station with the longer strand while preparing for the rappel with the descender on the shorter strand. The prusik knot is attached directly to the belay loop via a carabiner.
Adjustable Lanyard: The Ideal Solution for Optimal Positioning
The adjustable lanyard offers the advantage of being lengthened or shortened using an auto-locking cam. This allows for one-handed adjustments, and once tensioned, the cam locks the lanyard securely in place.
