What is the purpose of a climbing lanyard?
An essential part of a climber’s gear, the belay lanyard allows you to perform a wide range of maneuvers for outdoor climbing on crags.
- Clip into an anchor on the route to take a rest
- Secure yourself at the belay station while setting up a multi-pitch anchor or while your second is following on a multi-pitch route
- Rappel down using a descender on one of the two strands
- Work a section while remaining attached
- Clip in for a rest on a via ferrata if you get tired
- Use a via ferrata pulley to cross a zip line
Key difference between a Dyneema sling and a dynamic lanyard
From a safety standpoint, it’s crucial to distinguish between a dynamic lanyard made from climbing rope and a static Dyneema sling. The dynamic lanyard absorbs impact in the event of a fall at the anchor before the first quickdraw, whereas the Dyneema sling offers no shock absorption and cannot withstand a factor 2 or even factor 1 fall.
It is therefore essential to use climbing rope to make a robust personal anchor. The Dyneema sling can be used to link anchor points, provided you properly equalize the anchor to avoid any shock loading on the sling in case of a fall.
Warning: a climbing lanyard made from dynamic rope is not suitable for via ferrata. The energy absorption provided by a climbing lanyard is not sufficient to absorb a fall on a via ferrata. For this activity, you must use a via ferrata lanyard with an integrated energy absorber.
The single lanyard: the minimum for sport climbing
The single lanyard is the most affordable model available. It features a single strand of dynamic rope of fixed length, usually quite short. One end has an industrially sewn loop for maximum strength. This loop allows you to attach it to your harness tie-in points with a girth hitch. The other end has another loop to hold a locking carabiner or an auto-locking carabiner.
The double lanyard: a must-have for multi-pitch climbing
The double lanyard is based on the same principle as the single lanyard but features two strands of different lengths so you can choose the most suitable strand for the situation. Generally, it’s more convenient to clip into the anchor with the long strand and set up your rappel with the descender on the short strand. The prusik is attached directly to the harness tie-in point with a carabiner.
The adjustable lanyard: the ideal solution for perfect positioning
This adjustable lanyard has the advantage of being length-adjustable thanks to a small self-locking cam. You can adjust the length with one hand. Once you’ve found the right length, the cam locks automatically under tension.
