Technical trekking clothes for epic hikes!
Hiking apparel takes advantage of ever more sophisticated technologies, materials and features as years go by. Synthetic fibres have made it possible to beat records in terms of thermoregulation, moisture wicking, protection from UV light and softness of touch. For the upper body, an absorbing and breathable layer such as a hiking shirt or a hiking tee-shirt will keep you dry. An insulating mid layer ensures great thermal comfort, and finally a waterproof and windproof hiking jacket, to be worn as an outer layer to protect you efficiently from the elements, without taking too much space in a backpack. For the lower body, waterproof hiking pants are optimal. With such an outfit for cold and rainy days, it will be easy to prepare for hotter days. Loose fitting garments, offering coverage and protection from UV light will be perfect, with a lightweight, water repellent softshell jacket in the backpack.
What outdoor outfit to wear for trekking in summer and winter?
Summer implies specific weather conditions for hiking. The heat encourages to walk with less clothing on, however when the sun shines, it is better to choose a long-sleeved T-shirt and hiking pants over a short-sleeved T-shirt and hiking shorts. They offer better protection from the sun and its effect on your skin, and also from mosquitoes when passing by wet areas. Most summer models are light, breathable, wick moisture away and dry quickly. To be ready for anything it is best to have a change of dry clothes in your backpack and a light shoftshell jacket, in case a storm was to arrive.
When it comes to winter hikes, it is not as simple: it is not a matter of looking for the warmest layers, but the most suited to your route. If you take technical trails with steep slopes, it will not be necessary to keep the heat generated by your body with insulating layers! This leads to wearing a jumper and a scarf after overheating, but be subjected to wind and water! A windproof, waterproof and breathable outer layer will do a much better job and will protect you from the elements and prevent you from overheating. Be careful to put on a warm layer for a less intense section or in case you stop for an extended period to compensate as your body cools down.
Style and peace of mind
The clothing item with the least amount of impact on the environment is the one that is not manufactured. Conscious of their environmental impact, numerous brands move towards more sustainable designs to protect the nature we so much want to explore. These brands relentlessly offer clothing lines with refined designs, good technical performance and made of recycled materials or free of harmful components. Labels and standard reassure on some criteria: organic origin of fibres, audit of good working conditions for workers on the entire manufacturing line, wellbeing of the animals on which the down is collected. Take a good look at the characteristics of our products and look for the following labels: Oeko-Tex, Bluesign, Fair Wear, Fair Trade, GOTS, RDS and Organic Cotton.
