What is the purpose of a rope bag in climbing?
While in multi-pitch climbing and mountaineering it's essential to know how to properly coil your ropes to carry them slung directly over your shoulder, it's a different story for sport climbing, where a rope bag truly makes life easier by providing quick access to your gear. With a rope bag, there's no need to coil your rope meticulously—storage is fast and hassle-free. While climbing, the rope feeds out automatically, and at the end of your session, you just need to gradually stow it back in the bag, simply avoiding unnecessary loops.
The rope bag is made from a durable outer material and features a clean internal compartment for easy and practical storage, thanks to a wide opening with various closure systems available.
Safety Tip: You can tie the end of your rope (the one at the very bottom under the loops) to a loop on your rope bag, usually located at a corner of the tarp. This knot easily replaces the usual stopper knot at the end of the rope, helping prevent accidents with ropes that are too short.
Pro tip for longer lifespan: If you tend to always leave the same end of your rope attached to the bag, we recommend switching ends from time to time to even out wear.
Models to carry over the shoulder or as a backpack
In our climbing section, you'll find rope bags that can be carried either over the shoulder or as a backpack, and some models offer both carrying options. The over-the-shoulder style is usually the most budget-friendly. It lets you pack your rope and easily carry it from your car to a nearby crag, or wear your rope in front with another gear backpack on your back. For longer approaches, it's better to go for a backpack-style rope bag for much greater comfort and to keep your hands free.
Handy extra features:
Each rope bag comes with its own features and carrying options, such as internal or even external pockets, tie-in loops for the rope, handles inside, a large zippered opening, foam shoulder straps with varying levels of padding, or compression straps. Most rope bags are compatible with all rope lengths thanks to their generous volume. Whether you have a 50-meter climbing rope, a 70-meter climbing rope, or even a 100-meter rope, you should have no trouble fitting it in. The bag also lets you carry extra gear, water, snacks, your helmet, or even your flip-flops.
