What is the purpose of a rope bag in climbing?
While in multi-pitch climbing and mountaineering it’s essential to coil ropes properly for carrying them over the shoulder, rope bags are a game-changer for sport climbing by allowing quick access to your gear. With a rope bag, there’s no need to coil your rope meticulously—storage becomes fast and hassle-free. When you're climbing, it unwinds automatically and, at the end of the session, you simply put it back in the bag gradually, avoiding unnecessary loops.
A rope bag is made from a durable outer material and includes a clean, internal space for convenient storage, thanks to its wide opening and various closure systems.
Safety Tip: You can attach one end of your rope (the one at the bottom of the pile) to a loop in your rope bag, typically located at a corner of the tarp. This knot acts as a safeguard against accidents involving ropes that are too short.
Pro Tip for Longevity: If you always keep the same end of your rope attached to the bag, consider reversing it periodically to ensure even wear.
Models for Shoulder Carry or Backpack Style
In our climbing section, you’ll find rope bags designed for either shoulder carry or backpack-style use, with some models offering both options. Shoulder carry bags are usually more affordable and allow you to transport your rope easily from your vehicle to a nearby climbing spot or carry it in front while wearing another backpack. However, for longer approaches, a backpack-style rope bag is more comfortable and keeps your hands free.
Useful Features to Look For
Each rope bag comes with unique features and carrying options, such as internal or external pockets, attachment loops for the rope, internal handles, a large zippered opening, foam-padded straps of varying thickness, or compression straps. Most bags are compatible with ropes of all lengths thanks to their generous capacity. Whether you have a 50-meter climbing rope, a 70-meter climbing rope, or even a 100-meter rope, you should have no trouble fitting it. Additionally, the bag can carry extra gear like accessories, water, food, your helmet, or flip-flops.
