The story of the brand Deuter begins in 1898 when Hans Deuter builds his factory making canvas and linen weave in Augsburg-Oberhausen. In the first years of production, Deuter's major clients are the Royal Post of Bavaria, the brand supplying postal bags, and civil and military clients. The brand provide them with tents, bags and backpacks. Their products are super durable and reliable.
Then in 1928, the Deuter company starts paying attention to mountaineering and high alpine products thanks to the expedition in Pamir, led by the alpinist and explorator Willi Rickmer. He and his partners are equipped with bags, tarps and tents made by Deuter. From then on, the german brand designs and develops new products with feedbacks from the terrain and keep on supplying expeditions with their products.
From the Nanga Parbat in 1934 to the north face of the Eiger in 1938 or again, the Nanga Parbat in 1954, the brand is very active and supplies pretty much every major german expedition. It becomes the leading rucksack manufacturer in Germany, and makes variety of bags and luggage.
The brand leads innovation and pushes performance to new levels. In 1984, Deuter builds the first ever bag with a back venting. The Air Comfort mesh panel is a true revolution as it ensures efficient venting and moisture wicking. The reputation of Deuter in the world of mountaineering is just as strong as its products. In the 1990's, Deuter releases its first mountain biking backpack and in 2005 it drops the first backpack with an integrated back protector for bikers and riders. The very same year, 2005, the legendary mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner joins the development team and works on expanding Deuter's line of women's backpacks called the Deuter SL series.
Up until today, Deuter haven't stopped working on improving their products both from a technical and from a social and environmental point of view. Deuter is one of the founders of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) that supports conservation projects worldwide. In 2008, the brand becomes a partner of the eco-clothing label Bluedesign® then joins in the Fair Wear Foundation in 2011. In 2015, the company receives the Best Practice Award and becomes member of the \"Textilbündnis\" which is an alliance aiming for improving textile supply chain on a ecological way.
