The elements to consider when choosing your shoes
Cushioning
As the name suggests, cushioning designates the shoe’s capacity to absorb shocks when striking the ground. If you run shorter distances, you’ll look for a lightweight shoe with a thin sole to be closer to the ground, feel the terrain and perform, while having nice traction.
A thicker shole will draw the attention of runners looking for a more comfortable shoe, that will protect their joints both on short, intermediate and long distances.
Grip
Contrary to running on pavement, for trail running, good grip is critical. Your needs are different whether you’re on dry and dusty trails, or wet and muddy terrain. The amount of traction depends on the shape of the lugs. The more aggressive the lugs are, the better suited to trail running in the rain the shoe is. On the other hand, shorter lugs provide better rebound and performance on dry terrain.
Protection
It is one of the main features differentiating a trail running shoe from a shoe meant for running on the road. The former is often reinforced on strategic areas such as the top of the foot or around the heel. If you run mostly on forest paths or fast rolling flat terrain, this criterion is less of a concern. However, trail runners who enjoy mountain outings need a good amount of protection to prevent injuries, for example when bumping into rocks.
Waterproofness
While shoes with a very efficient Gore Tex waterproof membrane have been popular lately, the issue needs to be balanced. While they are perfect in rainy conditions, Gore tex trail running shoes are not as breathable. Perspiration generated is not evacuated as well and can cause discomfort. We recommend pairing your waterproof shoe with a non-waterproof model and picking the right one according to the conditions.
Heel drop
Expressed in millimetres, it indicates the difference in height between the rear and front of the foot. A drop of more than 6 mm is better suited to athletes who strike heel first. A lower drop is perfect for those who strike with the forefoot. For in depth tips, contact our experts via phone on in store. They're here to help!
Pure trail running, mountain hiking, what is your activity?
Short trail runs
Someone who runs short or intermediate distances will prefer a lightweight shoe, offering great responsiveness, firm rebound and performance. This type of dynamic shoes offers less cushioning and is meant for those looking to run fast and set new personal records!
Ultra-trail running
On the other hand, ultra-trail runners are looking to protect their joints to finish their adventures unscathed. Indeed, tendon and ligament pains are part of the sport. A shoe with a reinforced sole that offers good grip and cushioning will allow you to tackle your goals with confidence!
Mountain hiking
Trail running shoes have attracted hikers looking for lighter shoes for a few years. Of course, they will never be as rugged and will never offer the same level of ankle support than a high ankle hiking boot. However, reinforced trail running shoes will protect your entire foot perfectly. In addition, you’ll enjoy all the grip you need to hike with confidence.
