Better comfort in extremely low temperatures in the mountains
It goes without saying that when preparing a mountain adventure, your priority is being protected from the cold. The main advantage of down is its better thermal insulation. Generally made of goose or duck down, it constitutes your best bet to stay warm at night in cold conditions.
Compact and ultra-lightweight bags for backpacking, trekking and mountaineering
Another advantage, sleeping bags with a down fill are lighter and pack down smaller than synthetic models. They take up less space and reduce the weight of your backpack. While duck has the reputation of being of lesser quality, it is mainly heavier than goose. But this detail will be a concern only for the most demanding hikers. Indeed, during an expedition in extreme conditions, every detail counts to reduce the weight of your equipment. In any case, down sleeping bags all have a great capacity to capture and fill with air to feel plush and comfortable to the user.
How to wash your down sleeping bag?
Down sleeping bags need to be washed thoroughly. To do so:
- It is recommended to wash them at low temperatures (around 30°) to protect the material, and to keep them separated from other items.
- Turn the bag inside out before placing it in the washing machine.
- Use down specific detergent.
- Add tennis balls to prevent the formation of clusters of feathers.
- Do not use the spin cycle, it could damage the sleeping bag. Air drying is to be preferred.
Be aware that around 24 hours are required for the bag to be completely dry. It is recommended to wash your sleeping bag on a sunny day.
