What are the special features of cross-country ski socks?
It is customary to think that when skiing you have to put on big socks, indeed it can be useful in very cold weather, but in most cases it will only be an inconvenience especially in terms of footwear volume and it may create hard points.
Most cross-country ski socks are quite thin and have targeted reinforcements.
- Thermal reinforcement in the toes to protect against the cold.
- A slightly thicker mesh under the foot for comfort.
- Thicker heel reinforcement to prevent chafing and blisters.
- A very fine mesh at the instep to reduce the volume taken by the sock and to avoid discomfort in the footwear that can lead to poor blood circulation.
Socks are generally designed in several layers on top of each other on sensitive areas and in a single layer on areas that need more space to match the footwear volume of the shoes.
How to choose your cross-country ski socks?
First of all it is very important to choose the right size, better a well-fitting sock without folds than a sock that is too big and tends to go down, crease and create friction zones.
Then, you must also pay attention to the materials used according to your preferences, nylon, polyester, polyamide, polypropylene, Lyocell, wool and elastane are the materials present on cross-country ski socks depending on the model.
If you are looking for thermal comfort, the mixture of wool and synthetic is a good alternative, because it is the right compromise between heat supply, ventilation and quick drying.
Those who don't like the contact of wool will prefer synthetic blends which ensure lightness, ventilation and quick drying.
You should also take into account the footwear volume of your cross-country ski boots, as this is of paramount importance for your comfort. If you have narrow boots, do not wear socks that are too thick, as you may feel pain due to lack of volume in the metatarsals or instep.
Choosing socks is not difficult if you are aware of their importance for general comfort and what they can technically bring in terms of feeling and touching snow. It is therefore important to pay close attention to the information on the product sheets so as not to make any mistakes. And if need be, our Nordic experts are at your disposal to inform you, so do not hesitate to ask us!
