30l hiking backpacks

Capacity is one of the most important aspects to consider when choosing a hiking backpack. This factor directly affects your comfort and determines how much gear you’ll be able to carry. If you’re wondering whether 30L backpacks are suitable for day hikes, the answer is yes. In fact, they can even be used for longer outings, provided you pack only the essentials to avoid carrying unnecessary items. Naturally, if you only need to take a limited amount of gear, a 20-litre backpack may be sufficient. On the other hand, if you know you’ll need a bit more space, opt for a 40-litre model. It’s also worth noting that some 30-litre backpacks have expandable capacity. This is the case with certain Prolighter models from Millet, such as the 30+10 version.

What is the ideal weight for a 30-litre hiking backpack?

30L backpacks typically weigh between 650 g and 1.5 kg. Their design is what determines the weight, so it’s rare for two backpacks with the same capacity to weigh exactly the same. Brands such as Vaude, Osprey, Lafuma, Patagonia, Lowe Alpine, Ferrino, Mammut, Blue Ice, Dynafit, Ortovox, Salewa, RAB, Deuter and Cilao are among those that produce the lightest models. They all take great care in designing their packs to achieve the best balance between weight, durability and functionality, with the aim of making them as practical and ergonomic as possible while keeping the weight to a minimum.

What backpack capacity for a week-long trip? Is 30 litres big enough?

If you’re looking for a backpack for a week of hiking or backpacking, we recommend choosing one with a capacity of 50 to 70 litres. It will allow you to carry all your gear: tent, sleeping bag, liner, trekking mat, clothing, camping stove, cooking pot, water, food, and more. However, a 30-litre backpack can be enough for a week if you’re hiking light, have regular access to supplies, and plan to stay in hostels or mountain refuges.

What size backpack is allowed as carry-on luggage on a plane?

If you're flying and want to use a backpack as your carry-on bag, a 30-litre pack is a very sensible choice. In fact, some models come with compartments specifically designed to carry a laptop, which will remain easily accessible during the flight. The Millet Ubic and Deuter Freerider are both good options. Naturally, it’s always best to check in advance that the dimensions comply with airline regulations.
