Mixed Climbing, Mountaineering or Ski Touring – A Helmet Keeps You Safe in the Mountains
A helmet is essential for protection against potential impacts and falling rocks. Whether you're on a crag or in the mountains, it is, like all your gear, crucial for ensuring optimal safety. Not so long ago, few adventurers wore helmets. But over the decades—and unfortunately due to accidents—that mindset has changed. Today, in climbing, mountaineering or ski touring, a helmet has become an almost essential piece of equipment.
The Best Brands Available in Our Online Shop
Here is a selection of comfortable helmets that are EN 12492 certified or multi-certified. For a secure fit, we offer helmets with adjustable chin straps. All are lightweight so you can forget you’re wearing them. For safety, some feature hard shells with internal strapping systems that provide excellent shock absorption. Others are even lighter with rigid foam shells that deform on impact to absorb shocks effectively. Finally, hybrid models combine a tough outer shell with internal foam padding.

When Should You Replace Your Climbing Helmet?
Knowing when to replace your gear is crucial. After a shock or significant impact, the structure of a helmet may be compromised and no longer provide proper protection. To ensure your safety, it's best to replace it without delay. In mountain environments—whether you’re climbing, mountaineering or ski touring—danger is ever-present, and safety is priceless!
Materials can degrade over time and through use, especially with intensive activity. Fortunately, helmets typically have a lifespan of several years. We recommend regularly inspecting your helmet for any cracks, signs of wear, and following the manufacturer’s guidelines. Most brands advise replacing your helmet every 5 to 10 years if it has not sustained damage. This timeframe accounts for material ageing and how frequently the helmet has been used.
Which Climbing Helmet Should You Choose for Maximum Safety?
The choice of helmet is crucial for your safety. On sport routes, multi-pitch climbs or in mountaineering, wearing a helmet is widely accepted, though it’s less common in bouldering.
For multi-pitch climbing, opt for a lightweight, well-ventilated helmet with extended coverage—comfortable enough to wear all day. These helmets prioritise comfort without compromising on protection.
In bouldering, helmets are rarely worn, as climbers tend to rely on crash pads. These pads usually cover the ground to cushion falls from short heights and provide protection from nearby rocks. However, wearing a helmet when bouldering can be a wise choice, particularly when rocky terrain or obstacles are present and not fully covered by crash pads.
In all cases, to maximise safety, it’s recommended to wear a helmet suited to your activity—and for that, several essential criteria must be considered.
Key Criteria for Choosing a Helmet
Intended Use
Choose a helmet tailored to your main discipline. For example, a mountaineering helmet offers more coverage to protect against cold and falling ice, while a sport climbing model focuses on lightness and ventilation. If you take part in multiple disciplines (climbing, mountaineering, ski touring, via ferrata, etc.), a multi-purpose, multi-standard helmet may be your best option.
Weight
A lightweight helmet is more comfortable and less noticeable, encouraging you to wear it at all times. It also reduces neck fatigue during long routes. However, don’t sacrifice durability: ultra-light foam models offer great protection but may be less hard-wearing than slightly heavier hard-shell alternatives.
Ventilation
In warm weather or during intense climbs, good ventilation is key. Generous vents help release heat and sweat, preventing you from overheating. On the flip side, in mountaineering, those vents may let cold in—though a thin beanie worn under the helmet can mitigate that.
Standards and Certifications
Always ensure your helmet meets the required safety standards. The EN 12492 European standard certifies that a helmet is suitable for climbing and mountaineering (impact resistance, penetration protection, secure chin strap system, etc.). Some models are also certified for skiing (EN 1077 alpine ski standard or specific touring standards). Dual-certified helmets offer versatile protection if you also ski or ice climb, ensuring maximum safety in a variety of conditions. By choosing a helmet that meets the standards for your chosen activities, you can trust your gear to perform reliably and effectively.
