Low cut, mid cut or high ankle: choosing the right cuff height

Just like adult models, children’s hiking boots are available in three different cuff heights: low, mid and high. Each has its own advantages.

Low-cut hiking shoes are ideal for allowing your child’s ankle to move freely. This flexibility means they’ll be able to fully enjoy walks and adventures with you. However, they’re not recommended if your child tends to injure this area.

In that case, it’s best to opt for a high-ankle boot. These taller models provide maximum foot support, helping prevent ankle twists. They offer excellent stability, especially on technical terrain.

If you're looking for both safety and freedom of movement, mid-cut boots are a great option. Offering a middle ground, they’re a solid choice for a variety of hikes, especially short to medium distances.

Children’s walking shoes: key features

Children's waterproof boots

Nobody likes having wet feet when the weather turns rainy. That’s why many brands offer waterproof hiking boots for kids. These models prevent water from getting in, improving comfort and helping avoid blisters. Most waterproof membranes are also breathable.

Breathability to wick away internal moisture

Even when it’s dry, it’s just as important to keep feet dry on the inside. Especially on warm, sunny walks, sweat can quickly become uncomfortable. That’s why breathability is essential—letting fresh air in helps ensure internal moisture is properly evacuated.

The sole: key to stable footing in the mountains

When you think hiking, you think contact with the ground. To ensure maximum grip, most brands use rubber soles for excellent traction across all kinds of terrain and outdoor activities. Lugs are often added to further improve grip and ensure secure footing.

Closure systems: laces, Velcro or elastic

The fastening style depends on the child’s age and the level of support needed. Velcro or elastic closures are perfect for younger children, offering ease of use and quick on-and-off. Lace-up models provide a more precise fit and better support—ideal for older kids or hikes on varied terrain. Some models combine laces with Velcro to offer both convenience and security.

What’s the difference between walking shoes, hiking boots and trekking footwear?

Walking shoes are lightweight, with low-cut uppers for maximum freedom of movement—ideal for roads or easy trails. Hiking boots provide more support and grip, often featuring mid-cut designs that protect the ankle—great for trails with elevation or forest terrain. Trekking boots are more rugged, with mid or high uppers depending on the technical level of the route. They offer excellent support on demanding terrain. Mesh models prioritise breathability for warm-weather walks, while waterproof boots provide extra protection from moisture—ideal for treks in uncertain weather.

For boys or girls: comfortable unisex walking footwear

All children’s walking boots and hiking shoes are designed for both girls and boys, making it easier to choose. To appeal to everyone, brands offer a range of colours so each child can pick according to their preferences and style.

The importance of the right shoe size

Finding the correct size in children’s hiking footwear can be tricky—your child’s feet are constantly growing, and it’s not always easy to get the fit right during a try-on. Start by measuring your child’s feet with a pedometer. Choose one size up. You should be able to fit your little finger between your child’s heel and the back of the shoe—no more, no less. While it may be tempting to buy larger shoes to make them last longer, this means your child’s foot will move around too much inside the boot, reducing support. This also increases the risk of friction or blisters.

Salomon, Adidas, Merrell... Trusted brands offering children’s models

There’s now a wide selection of hiking boots for kids, so you can easily find a pair that’s comfortable and well-suited to your little hikers. Brands understand that young adventurers want to join their parents and families on hikes. That includes Salomon, Adidas, and Merrell, as well as La Sportiva and Keen, the latter being known for its hiking sandals.
