An Essential Tool for Creating a Prusik or Klemheist for Safe Rappelling
When rappelling, it’s crucial to use a backup safety system that can stop your descent if you lose control of your belay device for any reason. To set up such a safety system, you can use either a French knot, a Klemheist (or Machard), or a Prusik, made with an accessory cord. For this, you’ll need approximately 1.6m to 1.8m of cord, depending on the type of knot, to create a 60 cm loop. To form the loop, you can use a double fisherman’s knot. For more details, check out our tutorial on How to Tie an Autoblocking Knot for Climbing.
