The importance of waxing in cross-country skiing cannot be overstated. It contributes to ski maintenance, glide quality, and overall fun. Well-maintained skis will have significantly longer-lasting bases compared to neglected ones. Over time, regular waxing improves the base and enhances glide, so if you want to fully enjoy skiing, frequent maintenance is highly recommended.
That’s why at Glisshop, we offer a wide selection of waxes from prestigious brands like Swix, Vauhti, Rode, Maplus, and Start, among others.
What Are the Different Types of Waxes?
Depending on your usage and athletic goals, there are several wax ranges available, some focused on maintenance and others on performance.
In short, we can classify them into the following categories:
- CH or related ranges: Ski maintenance
- LF or related ranges: Ideal for intense outings
- HF or related ranges: Base preparation for competition
- What does related ranges mean?
Related ranges refer to new fluor-free wax formulas designed for performance. For ecological and health reasons, leading brands have started developing fluorine-free wax ranges. Depending on the brand, these formulas may include zinc or ceramics. These new ranges will gradually replace fluorinated products, so it’s wise to start familiarizing yourself with them now.
Liquid or Solid Wax for Maintenance?
For ski maintenance, nothing beats hot waxing with solid wax. While liquid waxes have improved significantly in recent years, they still can’t entirely replace traditional hot waxing, which is more effective at reducing base abrasion. Liquid waxes are an excellent backup solution for improving glide when needed.
Liquid or Solid Wax for Races?
This often depends on the distance to be covered. For short distances, liquid HF wax can perform as well as solid HF wax, and the same applies to liquid Cera. However, over longer distances, as the wax wears off and the base accumulates dirt, solid or powdered waxes may deliver better results. Sometimes it’s beneficial to combine the two. There are many potential solutions, and experimenting can help you find what works best for specific conditions.
Waxing is not particularly complicated; you just need a sufficient variety of waxes and the right tools. Always have a few different temperature ranges available to adapt to varying conditions.
It’s important to note that using high-performance or fluorinated waxes for maintenance is unnecessary. Regular CH or related waxes are sufficient and even better for avoiding excessive application of fluorine or additives on your ski bases.
