How to choose your technical cross-country ski underwear?

First of all, it is important to see what type of skier you are, if you focus more on the sports and performance aspect, or if you are more interested in recreational cross-country skiing.

Another important point, which is very personal depending on the person, is your sensitivity to cold or heat. A person who is cold will not have the same needs as a person who sweats quickly or in abundance.

Last point, always adapt your underwear to the intensity of the effort, to the ambient temperature, and finally to the clothes you are going to put on over it.

Light synthetic underwear:

Among the lightest undergarments, we very often find polyamide for the best and polyester for cheaper ranges, but it depends on the brands and also on the knitting and sewing technique used. Not all brands have the same manufacturing techniques and some are more expensive than others. There can therefore be quite significant price differences between models and brands.

Light technical underwear is used in mild weather or for intense efforts where thermoregulation is imperative.

Lightweight woollen underwear for cross-country skiing :

Wool is the most effective material in terms of thermoregulation, and for this to be effective, manufacturers must play on the weight of thread per square metre. But this is not the only advantage of wool, which by nature is antibacterial. Who has never had a synthetic thermal undergarment whose smell of perspiration does not disappear over time and despite washing? Those who use it frequently have certainly already been confronted with this problem. This is one of the advantages of wool. Despite frequent use, wool does not retain unpleasant odours. Another very important point is that it is the most ecological material in terms of washing, as it does not release plastic particles into the water. At a time like the present, this is an argument to be taken into consideration.

Warm underwear for cross-country skiing:

Regardless of the material, in this category we play with the thickness of the fabric and the mesh, warm underwear is of course intended for cold temperatures or people who are cold. Some have stand-up collars, others have ½ zip collars or round collars depending on what people prefer to wear. It should also be understood that warm underwear intended for cross-country skiing will not be as warm as warm underwear used for downhill skiing. The reason is simple, the physical constraints are not the same and sweating is less important in downhill skiing than in cross-country skiing.

Buying guide for men's cross-country ski thermal underwear :

Whatever your level, thermal underwear is an accessory that cannot be dissociated from cross-country skiing. In hot or cold weather, training or competition, all occasions are good to wear one. These garments have evolved a lot over the last few years, becoming thinner for more comfort, but they still perform well.

What is the use of thermal underwear in cross-country skiing?

When we talk about underwear, we regularly use the term second skin. It is a layer that is worn directly on the body and that allows the creation of heat while efficiently evacuating perspiration. You can use it as a first layer when conditions are cold or as a single layer when temperatures are hot. They provide optimal thermoregulation. Competitors also wear it in competition under their ski suits. These two layers are enough to stay at the right temperature during the effort. The big advantage of thermal underwear is that it is very comfortable to wear. The materials used are indeed very soft and their cuts are very adjusted to fit your morphology. They are so pleasant that you will quickly forget that you are wearing one.

When and how to use a men's thermal cross-country ski underwear?

There are many opportunities: thermal underwear is an essential part of a cross-country skiing When it's cold, choose a second skin with a high collar. Usually made of brushed fabric, they offer a superb warm feeling and will protect your neck.

When it is warmer, a thinner thermal undergarment is recommended, it will be more efficient in evacuating perspiration caused by activity and heat. To dress well, it is advisable to play on the superimposition of complementary layers rather than on a single large ski jacket. Therefore it will be possible to remove a layer once the body has warmed up. Moreover, if we add up the clothes we will be able to target the best products in a specific area.

Example of an ideal layering of layers:

  • - Thermal underwear
  • - Lycra coverall top
  • - Jacket and/or sleeveless jacket

Buying guide for women's thermal cross-country ski clothing.

Whatever your level, the thermal undergarment will accompany you in all your sports outings. Acting like a second skin, it provides a pleasant feeling of warmth and effectively wicks away moisture. They are very comfortable and they have the gift of being quickly forgotten. Whether it's hot, cold, training or competing, all reasons are good to wear thermal underwear.

Are thermal underwear for cross-country skiing really useful?

Very thin, these clothes could almost be considered anecdotal, but make no mistake, they insulate you from the cold by trapping air in the mesh of the fabric. This technique allows you to regulate your body temperature so that it is always at the ideal temperature for the effort. You will avoid cold and hot weather. Mesh fabric inserts also allow perspiration to evacuate very quickly, which prevents you from freezing when it is really cold. Comfort is also important because these ski underwear have flat seams that prevent unwanted friction during exercise. And with their cut very close to the body you can forget them in seconds but you can't do without them. Try it is the adopted one!

How are the Nordic thermal underwear for women?

Thermal underwear is worn next to the skin. In the cross-country skier's clothing, it is the first layer of insulation and comfort. The upper layers depend on the weather conditions. When it is cold, it is also preferable to choose a technical undergarment with a high collar that will protect your neck. It's up to you whether you prefer to wear it under a wetsuit or under a Nordic ski jacket. On the contrary, if the temperatures are rather mild, a round-necked undergarment will be more than enough. Afterwards, it's up to you, under a jacket with or without sleeves, or simply under a wetsuit, it will be your main ally in evacuating perspiration.

Are there thermal underwear for the lower body?

That's right, brands also make thermal underwear for the legs. In Nordic skiing we call them pantyhose. They act in the same way to insulate your legs from the cold and wick away perspiration. They are worn under a wetsuit if you want to optimize your freedom of movement or under an overheat if the conditions are difficult.
