Slalom, Downhill... Why ski with an FIS helmet?
Get ready for the ski season with our FIS competition helmets for adults and kids. Whether it's for slalom or giant slalom, we have a selection of FIS-certified helmets, offering safety and comfort. Find the perfect size, whether you're an adult or young skier. Some of our helmets with chin guards offer additional protection for racing.
Choosing your FIS-certified ski helmet: key elements
Choosing an FIS ski helmet is based on several essential criteria to ensure your safety and comfort on the slopes.
- Size: measure your head circumference to choose the most suitable size. A well-fitted helmet will be both more comfortable and more effective in the event of a fall.
- Weight: a lightweight helmet will be more comfortable to wear for extended periods. Carbon fibre helmets are an excellent option for those seeking lightness.
- Specific features: some helmets offer additional features, such as adjustable ventilation or a chin guard for extra protection.
Certifications and standards: guaranteed safety
Racing ski helmets offered by Glisshop comply with FIS safety standards. To go into details, an FIS RH2013 helmet must withstand an impact at 21 km/h in penetration, which is more than double the impact speed for a standard ski helmet (10 km/h). This standard guarantees increased safety for elite level competitions.
They also meet theEN 1077 standard, which applies to alpine skiing helmets. This standard, which requires effective protection for a fall at 20 km/h, has two classes:
- Class A means that the ears are protected directly by the helmet, there are no removable ear pads
- Class B, which, as you may have guessed, offers removable ear pads to adapt your helmet according to the situation.
Class B is tolerated in competition, although it is more often found in consumer models. It's also worth noting that racing ski helmets have rigid ear pads to meet international standards.
Children's and adult's ski helmets: What are the differences?
Junior and adult ski helmets share many common features, but differences exist to cater to each age group. The main difference is size and fit. Kids’ helmets are designed to fit the smaller heads of children, while adult helmets come in larger sizes.
In terms of materials, junior helmets often use lighter materials so as not to be too heavy for the child's head. However, this does not compromise safety: all helmets, whether for adults or children, must comply with FIS safety standards.
Finally, the design can also vary. Children's helmets often have more playful patterns and colours, while adult helmets tend to be more subtle.
Head measurement and size guide
For an optimal fit with your ski helmet, it is essential to accurately measure your head circumference. To do so, use a tape measure and wrap it around your head, passing above the ears and eyebrows, as well as over the widest part of the skull at the back (the occiput). The size of your helmet will generally correspond to this measurement in centimetres. For optimal comfort, the helmet should be neither too tight nor too loose. It should remain stable without compressing your head. Some brands offer adjustable-size helmets for an even more precise fit.
The importance of wearing a helmet when skiing
The main purpose of wearing a ski helmet is to protect the skier from impacts that may occur during a fall or accident. In competitions, its use is mandatory, with specific standards for FIS ski helmets. These helmets are designed to withstand significant impacts, guaranteeing optimal protection.
Furthermore, the use of a helmet is strongly recommended for younger athlete categories, in anticipation of possible FIS events.
In addition to providing protection from impacts, the helmet also offers protection against the elements (rain, hail, snow) and contributes to the skier's comfort. Racing helmets are also often equipped with rigid ear protections, in accordance with international standards.
However, it should be noted that wearing a helmet does not exempt one from being cautious and responsible on the slopes.
Leading brands: Rossignol, Briko, Salomon, Dainese
As mentioned earlier, among the leading brands of FIS ski helmets are Rossignol, Briko, Dainese, and Salomon, they stand out for the quality of their products. Other brands also offer FIS models, giving you plenty of options!
