Waterproof and breathable hiking coats, Gore-Tex or others
Since mountain weather can change rapidly and is often unstable during the mid-season, a waterproof-breathable jacket is the most reassuring base layer. It protects against moisture and wind while allowing perspiration to escape. If your ascents are challenging, a hardshell jacket with underarm vents is a real plus. Opening the zips helps regulate body temperature and reduce internal humidity without having to remove the jacket as soon as the intensity increases.
Windproof and water-repellent jackets
If the weather stays dry but the wind picks up along the ridges, a windproof water-repellent (softshell) jacket may be enough. Whether on a multi-day route, a full-day or half-day outing in the mountains, or during a fast-paced hike, it provides warmth during exertion while maintaining excellent range of motion. The water-repellent finish helps withstand light drizzle or morning dew on vegetation, but once the rain becomes steady, a hardshell regains the upper hand.
Differences between fleece jacket and down jacket
When the cold sets in (early starts in the shade, breaks at the top of a pass, or windy late afternoons), an insulating layer becomes essential, though it doesn’t replace an outer shell. A wool or synthetic jumper works well, while cotton should be avoided as it absorbs moisture and dries slowly, which can quickly chill you once your pace drops.
For hiking use, a zipped fleece or a down jacket (synthetic or down insulation) helps regulate temperature during breaks or slower phases. Some are water-repellent, but they are not waterproof and generally less effective against the wind. The simplest approach is to keep the fleece or down jacket as a mid-layer, then put on a windproof and/or waterproof-breathable shell when humidity or gusts set in.
Waterproof rain jackets
If rain threatens along your route, a rain jacket ensures effective protection when showers persist. Often with a Gore-Tex membrane, they provide reliable waterproofness to keep you walking through rain or drizzle.
