Hiking jackets
Which jacket should you choose for hiking?
If the weather is often unpredictable, one thing is certain: you need a jacket for hiking. What will determine your choice are the conditions in which you'll be walking (weather, altitude, seasons, etc.). Fortunately, no hiking garment is limited to just one type of use. Ideally, you should go for a jacket that’s as versatile as possible to avoid having to buy several. It should offer effective protection from the wind and, if needed, from the rain as well. It also needs to allow air to circulate to minimise discomfort, so you can make the most of every outing in the best possible conditions.

Which technical jacket should you choose for hiking?
The choice of a hiking jacket is based on three essential criteria: protection, breathability, and weight.
Waterproof and breathable jackets like Gore-Tex
To cope with rain and wind, a waterproof and breathable jacket (hardshell) with a membrane such as Gore-Tex, DRYOsphere, H2No, Powertex, Dermizax, BD.Dry or Dryedge—as found in Millet garments—will keep you dry while helping to wick away perspiration.
For enhanced breathability, you can opt for a jacket with underarm vents, which allow air to circulate and help regulate your body temperature—particularly useful during intense activities, like in a steep climb.
Windproof and water-repellent jackets
Wind can be a real challenge when hiking. Even if it’s not particularly cold, the wind cools the body and can quickly turn a pleasant walk into an uncomfortable experience. Our windproof jackets are essential for proper protection and to help you enjoy the scenery. If the weather is dry but windy, a softshell jacket may be sufficient.
Fleece jacket or insulated jacket?
When it’s cold, an insulating layer is essential. There are several options to help you hike without shivering. You could wear a wool jumper, synthetic materials, or cotton. However, we advise against cotton. While comfortable and absorbent, it dries slowly and can make you feel cold, which is far from ideal.
We recommend going for a sweatshirt or a zip-up fleece jacket. You can also choose a down or synthetic insulated jacket. But be aware: while some fleeces and insulated jackets are water-repellent, they are not waterproof. Often, they are not windproof either. To protect yourself from wind and rain, you’ll need a windproof and/or waterproof walking jacket worn over the fleece or insulated layer as a mid-layer.

Our tips for finding the right hiking jacket
- Tip no. 1: Refine your selection by picking out several models that suit the conditions you’re most likely to encounter.
- Tip no. 2: Look for the best balance between protection and versatility. In fact, the same jacket can serve you both on a rainy and windy walk on the coast, and on a hike in the Pennines when the cold reminds you that the mountains aren’t always welcoming. In both cases, your mid-layer will be responsible for keeping you warm.
- Tip no. 3: To determine the level of waterproofness you need, consider the environments and conditions you’ll most often face. If you frequently encounter rain, snowfall, or fog, prioritise a jacket with a high waterproof rating.
- Tip no. 4: Weight and packability also matter—especially on treks. If you go days or even weeks without needing your jacket, it’s best if it’s lightweight and packable, so it stays out of the way in your backpack.
- Tip no. 5: Practical features like a high collar, Velcro cuffs, a drawcord hem, adjustable hood, accessible pockets, and underarm zips may seem like minor details, but they can make a big difference in comfort and are worth considering when making your choice.
Waterproof rain jackets
If bad weather is likely during the time you plan to hike, you can go for a rain jacket. Often designed with a Gore-Tex membrane, these jackets offer excellent waterproofness to keep you dry even in heavy showers. You can filter by waterproof rating to help choose. The higher the rating, the more waterproof the jacket. A 30,000 mm (or 30K) jacket is highly waterproof, while a 5K jacket is much less so. At Glisshop, you’ll also find a full collection of hiking rain capes, also known as ponchos or rain cloaks. They’re ideal for gearing up the whole family without breaking the bank.
Can you use a walking coat for ski touring?
A hiking jacket can be used for ski touring, especially if it’s waterproof and breathable. That way, you can move comfortably on snow without overheating during climbs, which are often quite the workout. Once at the top, before heading into the descent, just pull out a mid-layer from your backpack to stay warm. Of course, if you prefer to use a ski jacket, you’ll find a wide range available at Glisshop.
