How are Hanwag women’s and men’s shoes and boots made?

Hanwag’s hiking boots are made in three different ways.

Historically, in 1921, Hans Wagner’s boots were double-stitched, the most traditional way, which only a handful of shoe makers are still able to do.

Progressively, the cemented construction appeared to be replaced nowadays by the innovative technology of direct injection. This technique allows to bond directly the outsole to the shoe or boot.

As each and every foot is different and not all shapes of sole and last can suit every hiker or alpinist, Hanwag has developed specific shapes for a perfect fit years ago. We can name for example, Bunion models specifically designed for people who suffer from hallux valgus.

How to choose the size of Hanwag boots?

To choose the right size for your Hanwag shoes you can use a pedimetre, to measure with precision your foot length. You can also pick half a size over your usual lifestyle shoe as your feet tend to heat up and sweal when hiking. It is better to choose a slightly bigger Hanwag shoe, which will be easier to adapt compared to a shoe that is definitely too small. It is generally recommended to have some spare room at the front of the shoe when your heel is securely locked into place at the back.

The other great strength of Hanwag is its specific Bunion fit which allows athletes suffering from hallux valgus to finally find a comfortable shoe.

Hanwag Gore-Tex shoes and boots: a benchmark to stay dry

Thanks to their waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex membrane Hanwag Yak leather boots allow you to face the worst weather conditions with confidence. The advantage of a Gore-Tex membrane on a leather boot is that it retains its waterproofness even when the leather is no longer waxed and becomes porous. It is also possible to play with this wax coating to alter the breathability of the boot. In summer, you can use less wax to enhance the breathability of leather and improve the ability to evacuate perspiration, while in winter a well waxed boot will offer efficient protection in snow or mud. Wax also nourishes the leather and prevents it from cracking over time.

Hanwag footwear: exclusively made in Europe

Innovation and quality manufacturing mean a good pair of Hanwag hiking boots costs less than £200 for a profit margin substantially inferior to a pair of sneakers. With Hanwag no detail is neglected in the manufacturing of the hundred or so pieces required for a boot, from the high-quality Vibram outsole to the timeless full grain leather upper and durable lacing system. To maintain the highest level of quality for relatively modest collections, Hanwag exclusively produces in European factories. The brand relies on a factory in Hungaria, as well as a family-run Croatian boot making company which has been working exclusively for the Hanwag for over 30 years. Hanwag still produces boots where the company is based in Vierkirchen as well.

However, the key to longevity for a mountain boot brand has always been knowing how to evolve with time, while drawing lessons from the past. Here is why Hanwag was acquired in 2004 by Swedish group Fenix, with the goal of keeping Hanwag in the high-end hiking footwear segment. The lines have evolved in terms of colours and design and the models are more diversified to cover more outdoor activities. Hanwag remains a core high-quality mountain footwear manufacturer from a small Bavarian village, that sells boots all over the world.

The bottom line is that over a century after being created by Hans Wagner, Hanwag remains one of the undisputed leaders on the European mountain footwear market.
