Buyer’s Guide for Men’s Ski Jackets: Gear Adapted to Your Discipline

Warm Piste Skiing Coats

When skiing groomed runs in a ski resort, your ski jacket and trousers need good insulation to keep you warm during descents, as well as on chairlifts where wind exposure can be downright freezing.

Freeride Skiing Jackets

In the backcountry, whether for freestyle or freeride, you need a ski outfit that’s both warm and highly waterproof. Your jacket, along with your ski or snowboard trousers, must ensure you can tackle thick layers of powder without letting moisture in.

Lightweight Ski Touring Jackets

For ski touring and splitboarding, given the intense effort during uphills, you should opt for a ski outfit that’s not necessarily insulated. Protection against the cold during descents will come from layering: a technical base layer, a mid-layer such as a fleece or lightweight down jacket, and, as the third layer, a ski jacket that’s waterproof, windproof, and breathable.

Gore-Tex and Other Types of Waterproof Membranes

What Are the Advantages of a Gore-Tex Men’s Ski Jacket?

Who hasn’t heard of Gore-Tex? A benchmark in the outdoor industry, the American brand Gore-Tex is renowned for its effectiveness in weather protection with various membrane options: Gore-Tex, Gore-Tex Pro, Gore-Tex Paclite and Paclite Plus, Gore-Tex ShakeDry, Gore-Tex Active, Gore-Tex Surround, etc. The latest, Gore-Tex Infinium, is the only non-waterproof membrane, designed exclusively as windproof. Other than this, Gore-Tex is synonymous with waterproofness. It’s no surprise, then, that most ski jackets use Gore-Tex waterproof-breathable membranes. However, some brands like Millet, Patagonia, Burton, Picture Organic Clothing and Columbia have developed their own membranes or fabrics, showcasing ingenuity in waterproofness and breathability.

Are Jackets from Millet, Burton, Columbia, Picture, and Patagonia Just as Protective?

Whether designed with a Gore-Tex membrane or another type, the strength of a waterproof-breathable ski jacket lies in its ability to protect against both external moisture and internal moisture. Sweat, if not properly wicked away, quickly creates an unpleasant chill. To prevent internal moisture from ruining your mountain experience, waterproof-breathable membranes, with their microporous design, allow sweat vapour to escape while blocking larger water molecules from entering. Textile innovations now enable brands to design ski gear tailored to different skier needs, with membranes offering varying degrees of waterproofness and breathability.

Choosing the Right Ski or Snowboard Jacket

As mentioned earlier, waterproofness and breathability are two key criteria when choosing a jacket. If you ski exclusively on resort groomers, alternating between chairlifts and leisurely descents, you don’t need a highly waterproof 3-layer Gore-Tex jacket. This type of jacket is perfect, however, for ski mountaineers, freeride skiers, and splitboarders. If you’re building jumps in the snow for freestyle tricks, make sure your men’s ski coat suits your activity without being overly insulated to avoid overheating.

Insulation is also important; it shouldn’t be excessive, or you risk overheating, which can be equally uncomfortable. To prevent this, follow the three-layer rule: first, a technical base layer close to the skin; second, a fleece mid-layer; and third, a ski jacket. On colder days at high altitudes, you can opt for a lightweight or natural down jacket as your mid-layer.

With ski and snowboard parkas with Polartec, Primaloft, or Thinsulate insulation, you may skip the second layer if you’re not sensitive to cold or if weather conditions are mild. Be cautious, though, not to underdress on chairlifts, where sudden winds can leave you regretting your choice.

Most importantly, avoid wearing cotton t-shirts under your ski jacket. Cotton absorbs moisture but dries very slowly, leading to dampness and an unpleasant chill. Simply put: avoid cotton!

Key Features of Different Men’s Ski Clothing Brands

Beyond waterproofness, breathability, and insulation, exploring the men’s ski jacket section reveals countless technical features that differentiate models. Some brands have developed their own fabrics and technologies, each adding unique touches to their jackets. Picture Organic Clothing, for example, includes pockets to keep your smartphone dry and inner pockets with a microfleece goggle wipe.

Some features, such as lift pass pockets on the forearm, have become standard across most brands, allowing easy access to magnetic lift cards. Many ski jackets are also equipped with a snow skirt to prevent powder from entering around the hips.

Now, the choice is yours among the many men’s ski jacket models crafted by brands like Rossignol, Helly Hansen, Sun Valley, Superdry, Volcom, Burton, Colmar, Scott, and many more.
