Salomon is an iconic French brand that can count on high-quality products and a solid know-how in terms of manufacturing. Not only they make excellent piste skis but they also recently shifted their focus on All-mountain and Freeride models to offer you a wider choice and show you that they are worthy of their reputation!
Salomon X-Drive All Mountain series
With the X-Drive series, Salomon is releasing light and powerful skis that will please all-mountain riders. Their name was inspired by their X-shaped chassis, a diagonal carbon reinforcement that increases the torsional stiffness while keeping the weight low in order to make the ski more stable and grippy on the edge.
Construction-wise, you've got plenty of choice, from sandwich to monocoque through semi-sandwich constructions, incorporating low density woodcores (X-Drive 8.8 FS and X-Drive 8.0 FS), regular woodcores (X-Drive 8.3, X-Drive 80 TI) or composite cores (X-Drive 80, X-Drive 80 MG, X-Drive 75).
Like Rossignol with their Air Tip technology, Salomon uses a honeycomb structure on the tips of the X-Drive 8.3 and X-Drive 8.0 in order to make their skis lighter. It also brings back the weight towards the center of the ski to give you more control.
The whole series (except the X-Drive 80 TI) features a layer of titanal designed to reinforce the ski. The X-Drive 80 TI features a dual layer instead, making the ski even more powerful and precise. All skis in the line also get rockers. With an All-Terrain rocker (rockered tip) on the X-Drive 80 TI, X-Drive 80 MG, X-Drive 80 and X-Drive 75 and an All-terrain 2.0 rocker (rockered tip and tail) on the X-Drive 8.3, X-Drive 8.0 FS and X-Drive 8.8 FS.
In the end, the Salomon X-Drive series stands as the best all-mountain series ever made by the brand. Precise, responsive and versatile, they deliver tons of stability and feel agile and fun to play with through the whole mountain.
Nice one by Salomon, thumbs up!
Freeski Salomon Q Series
You can tell what these skis are worth at first sight! Made for men and women, the Q-Series are made for slashing powder, deep powder. The deeper, the better!
Let’s begin gentle with the Q-85 and its 85mm waist. A ski that handles groomed snow as well as powder. Its short turning radius and Hook Free tapered shape allow for good carving performance while the Utility Rocker delivers the agility and the floatation required for surfing powder. Ideal for riders who want a quiver rather than a specific powder ski!
The Q-90 features a similar construction but comes with a waist that is 5mm wider (90mm) and a slightly longer turning radius. That makes the ski a little more floaty on powder and allows further ventures through the deep. Then you get the Q-98 with which you’re clearly changing category. If the two others could be considered all-mountain skis, this one is a freerider with its 98mm at the waist and honeycomb structure for a minimal weight, not made for goofing around!
Finally, we've got the Q-105 and Q-115, both standing at the high end of the line. They come with vertical sidewalls and no edge on the tips to minimise weight. The Q-105 delivers stunning traction and stability on hardpack despite its massive sidecuts. The Q-115 looks and works like a wild beast too with its 115mm waist and Utility Rocker delivering an effortless floatation and optimal stability. Charge the mountain as hard as you want, it won’t mind.
