The Origin and Evolution of Scott Sports

From a Ski Pole...

It all began in the United States in 1958: Ed Scott created the first aluminium ski pole. Both lightweight and durable, it made steel poles obsolete. The adventure of Scott Sports, a pioneering company in the ski world, was launched.

In 1970, Scott diversified by launching a revolutionary pair of motocross goggles, followed by a series of technical accessories for the sport. Scott's R&D labs were busy and released ultra-light ski boots the following year. 1971 also saw the launch of the first Scott ski goggles with ventilated foam. Scott Sports then moved to Givisiez in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.

...to Road Bikes and Full-Suspension Mountain Bikes

In the late 80s, the brand ventured into the world of mountain biking with the launch of its first mountain bike. The bike saga would not stop there. In 1989, Scott revolutionised road cycling with new aerodynamic handlebars, used by American Greg Lemond, which led him to victory in the Tour de France during the final time trial.

Two years later, Scott introduced the Unishock suspension, which proved its worth in the World Cup the same year. Building on this success, Scott released the first full-suspension mountain bikes in 1992, then diversified into accessories such as helmets, backpacks, shoes, and technical clothing.

In 1998, the brand launched the G-Zero, the world's lightest full-suspension mountain bike, which quickly became a benchmark in the field. From 2000, Scott pushed the limits once again with the Strike Carbon, the world's lightest bike. Scott applied the same winning formula to road cycling with the Team Issue, featuring a frame weighing less than 1 kg, and later with the even lighter CR1.

The 90s: A Successful Return to Winter Sports

After taking the lead in the mountain bike market, Scott returned to the forefront of winter sports in 1994 with a collection of ski gloves and mittens. The brand further strengthened its presence in this segment in 1997 with its first line of technical clothing and its first series of Scott skis.

In 2004, the company won the European Ski Award with its Biomex helmet, which offered revolutionary protection for winter sports. This Scott ski helmet stood out from the competition with its lightweight construction and revolutionary ergonomics for the time, reducing shocks and impacts.

A Small Company Becomes a Giant

Since then, Scott Sports' R&D labs have been running at full capacity, constantly revolutionising sports equipment. In 2006, Scott-branded running shoes appeared on the market, followed by the Addict, a bike frame weighing just 750 grams, in 2007.

2008 saw the launch of a new type of sunglasses lens specifically designed for high altitudes: the Solar Blocker. This lens filters the light spectrum and reduces the blue wavelength, which is harmful to the eyes during mountaineering and glacier expeditions. Passionate skiers will also remember the iconic Crusair ski, the brand's first carbon freeride/touring ski. Air channels sculpted into the core significantly reduce weight without compromising downhill performance. This came just in time for the explosion of ski touring.
