How to choose a good down jacket?
The down jacket is a warm and comfortable garment, ideal for protection against the cold. There are various types, each with its own characteristics. Choosing the right one is not difficult – simply consider your body shape and how you intend to use it.
A down jacket that keeps you warm under a ski or snow jacket
While some ski jackets are heavily insulated, many are designed to be waterproof, windproof and breathable only. They therefore need an insulating mid-layer. If, like us, you follow the three-layer clothing system, you’ll know that the down jacket serves as the second layer, providing essential thermal insulation.
When choosing your ski jacket, you should also decide what type of mid-layer you prefer. Since insulation is key, a down jacket is ideal as a mid-layer. Opt for a lightweight model, as a bulky one may make you feel restricted and uncomfortable.
Adding a thin, lightweight down insulated coat to your ski outfit
To fully enjoy winter sports and move around the resort more comfortably than with a traditional ski coat, you can choose a warm down jacket. Models filled with down and feathers are known to be the most efficient for facing freezing temperatures.
Some of the puffer jackets selected by Glisshop are suitable for everyday wear, while others are clearly designed for more demanding activities such as mountaineering or ski touring. They truly excel during multi-day expeditions when temperatures drop significantly.
Which down jacket for ski touring?
Ski touring requires an ultra-packable down jacket that fits easily into your rucksack during the climb while providing effective thermal insulation during breaks or at the summit.
For ski touring, we recommend choosing a goose down micro-jacket with a high fill power, ensuring the best warmth-to-weight ratio. You can also opt for sleeveless models to prevent overheating during exertion. Unlike natural down, synthetic insulated jackets retain their insulating properties even when wet, making them an excellent alternative for dealing with rapidly changing mountain weather. In all cases, look for technical features such as wind resistance, water-repellent finish and waterproof zips for optimal protection in alpine conditions.
A mid-season model for your outdoor activities
Manufacturers are constantly innovating to design technical down jackets that are highly versatile for use in-between seasons, in autumn and spring. These models are equally at home in the city or in the mountains on a hike. They’re easy to put on and take off, providing just the right amount of warmth for all your shoulder-season outdoor adventures.
Puffer jacket: with or without sleeves?
The down jacket is a warm, comfortable garment for winter. It can also be worn in transitional seasons when the weather demands it and put away when the warmer days arrive. It comes in several styles, with or without sleeves.
- A long-sleeved down jacket is warmer, as it covers both the torso and arms, offering full protection from the cold. Some hooded down jackets resemble lightweight jackets and can be worn as an outer layer.
- A sleeveless down vest is generally lighter and more minimalist. It keeps the core and back warm – the areas most sensitive to cold – while providing maximum freedom of movement for the arms. A sleeveless down jacket is ideal as an additional layer for skiing, hiking, mountaineering, and more.
With or without sleeves, it’s also a matter of style. Choose the model that appeals to you most and, above all, suits your needs best.
What’s the difference between goose/duck down fill and synthetic insulation?
The warmest down jackets are filled with goose or duck down and feathers. These lightweight materials provide outstanding insulation and excellent breathability. Goose down jackets are highly packable, easily fitting into a backpack until needed. However, they have one drawback: they’re sensitive to moisture. While most are treated with a water-repellent finish to reduce this risk, prolonged exposure to snow or rain can eventually allow moisture to penetrate the outer fabric, causing the feathers to lose their insulating power.
This is why, for many years now, manufacturers have also offered jackets with synthetic insulation, which remains warm even when wet. They tend to be slightly heavier than natural down jackets but are generally more durable and versatile.
The advantages of a heated down jacket in the mountains
Heated down jackets are an excellent way to stay warm when temperatures plummet or if you’re particularly sensitive to the cold. As easy to put on as any other jacket, they’re just as comfortable and can be worn all day without issue. Their key difference lies in the integrated heating system powered by a rechargeable battery. There are also heated gloves and socks that work on the same principle.
Which fit to choose for men or women?
For men, there are three main fits: regular, tailored and relaxed.
- The regular fit is the most versatile, offering a good balance between comfort and freedom of movement – ideal for all body types.
- The tailored fit follows the body’s shape and suits athletic or slender builds, without restricting mobility.
- The relaxed fit is looser and preferred by taller or broader men, as well as those seeking maximum comfort and thermal efficiency during intense mountain activities.
For women, two main fits dominate: fitted and relaxed.
- The tailored fit hugs the silhouette while ensuring good mobility. It’s perfect for active women or those with a slim build.
- The relaxed fit suits all body types. Its looser volume allows for layering and enhances insulation – a real asset for outings at altitude or in very cold weather.
Down jacket, parka or waterproof coat for everyday wear?
Hesitating between a down jacket, a parka or a coat for winter? There are notable differences between these three types of outerwear. Down jackets and parkas are generally lighter than coats but just as practical for everyday use. Parkas and coats tend to offer better wind protection and weather resistance than down jackets, which, although water-repellent, are rarely fully waterproof or windproof.
