Which Burton Custom should you choose?

Burton Custom: the all-mountain freestyle benchmark

The Burton Custom is far more than just a standard all-mountain snowboard. For several decades, it has been one of the key models in the Burton line-up thanks to its highly successful balance of performance, versatility and playfulness.

Its directional twin shape allows you to ride comfortably both in your regular stance and switch, while retaining greater control through turns and improved ease when the snow gets deeper.

What is the Burton Custom’s preferred terrain?

The Burton Custom is designed for all-mountain freestyle. It is precise and stable on piste, responsive from edge to edge and versatile enough to perform in the park, on the side hits or off-piste.

Its traditional camber delivers solid grip on hard snow, powerful pop for ollies and excellent rebound out of turns. The wood core combined with fibreglass gives it a lively, well-balanced feel, with enough power to carve at high speed without turning the board into a model reserved exclusively for the most aggressive riders.

It can link big piste turns, tricks in the park and more natural backcountry lines, provided you have the technique required to master its camber and responsiveness.

Who is the Burton Custom for?

The Custom is mainly aimed at advanced to expert snowboarders looking for one board to ride the whole resort. It will particularly suit riders who like to carve, jump, ride switch and make use of the terrain rather than sticking to a single discipline.

It is not the best option for beginners: its classic camber requires precise pressure control and is less forgiving of mistakes than a softer model.

What are the main strengths of the Burton Custom?

  • Excellent versatility on piste, in the park and off-piste;

  • A great balance between power and playfulness;

  • Precise edge hold on hard snow;

  • Lively pop for freestyle riding;

  • Efficient performance when riding switch.

Burton Custom Flying V: more forgiving and more playful

The Burton Custom Flying V takes the DNA, directional twin shape and versatility of the classic Custom, but uses a Flying V profile. This hybrid camber combines cambered zones underfoot with a rocker section between the bindings and towards the tips.

This difference in profile noticeably changes the way the board rides. The Custom Flying V is easier to flex, smoother through transitions and less demanding when your pressure control is not perfectly precise. The rocker also improves float in powder and gives a lighter feel underfoot.

What is the Burton Custom Flying V’s preferred terrain?

The Custom Flying V is a versatile all-mountain freestyle board, designed for riders who prioritise ease of use, creativity and a comfortable ride. It remains responsive enough to carve and pop ollies, but it is less incisive and less locked in on edge than the classic camber Custom.

It is especially enjoyable on varied terrain, in softer snow, along piste edges and during freestyle sessions where playfulness matters more than pure performance. Its hybrid profile also makes presses easier and reduces the risk of catching an edge at low speed.

Who is the Burton Custom Flying V for?

The Custom Flying V suits intermediate to advanced snowboarders looking for a versatile, accessible and fun board. It is a good alternative to the classic Custom for riders who want to progress in freestyle or enjoy powder more without having to control an overly physical board.

However, it will be less suitable for a snowboarder whose main priorities are maximum grip on very hard snow, extremely precise turn control or a very powerful feel at high speed.

What are the main strengths of the Burton Custom Flying V?

  • A more forgiving ride than the classic Custom;

  • Outstanding versatility across all types of terrain;

  • Good float in powder;

  • A playful, intuitive feel;

  • Great ease when riding switch and progressing in freestyle.

Burton Custom X: the most powerful version

The Burton Custom X is the highest-performing and most demanding version in the Custom family. It keeps the directional twin shape of the Custom, but benefits from a stiffer, more responsive construction, notably through the use of carbon reinforcements and premium materials.

Its pronounced traditional camber, firm flex and high torsional stiffness allow it to remain extremely stable at speed and transmit pressure instantly. Where the Custom seeks balance, the Custom X clearly prioritises precision, power and explosiveness.

What is the Burton Custom X designed for?

The Custom X is an all-mountain board with a freestyle bias, built to ride fast and hard across the whole mountain. It excels in committed turns, powerful landings and big park features.

Its classic camber provides strong edge grip and particularly snappy pop. The Frostbite edges, slightly more pronounced underfoot, enhance hold on hard or icy pistes. The carbon reinforcements improve energy return and make the response to pressure almost instant.

This construction requires active riding. The Custom X does not pivot or flex as easily as a Custom Flying V: it expects the rider to load the board, control their lines and maintain precise pressure through the edges.

Who is the Burton Custom X for?

The Burton Custom X is aimed at advanced to expert snowboarders who want a board capable of handling powerful, committed riding. It will especially suit technical riders who charge hard on piste, carve at high speed or send tricks with serious amplitude.

It should be avoided by beginners, less powerful snowboarders or anyone looking first and foremost for a forgiving board that is easy to ride. Without sufficient commitment, its flex and responsiveness may become tiring rather than performance-enhancing.

What are the main strengths of the Burton Custom X?

  • Very strong edge hold on hard snow;

  • Excellent stability at high speed;

  • Powerful, explosive pop;

  • Immediate response to pressure;

  • Great versatility for expert riders.

Older versions in the Burton Custom range

The Custom family has seen several variations over the years.

Burton Custom X Flying V

The Custom X Flying V combined the premium construction and powerful flex of the Custom X with a Flying V hybrid camber. As a result, it retained good responsiveness while gaining forgiveness, manoeuvrability and float compared with the classic Custom X.

Its ride remained more demanding than the Custom Flying V, but it offered an interesting alternative for experienced riders looking for a powerful board without opting for the very incisive traditional camber of the Custom X.

Burton Custom Smalls

The Burton Custom Smalls was the children’s version of the famous Custom. Unlike the adult models, it used a perfectly symmetrical twin shape and a centred stance to make switch riding and learning freestyle easier.

Its camber was mellowed by upturned zones at the tips to make edge-to-edge transitions easier. It was designed for young snowboarders who already had solid basics and wanted to progress across the whole resort, especially in the park.

The story of the Burton Custom began in 1996

Introduced in the mid-1990s, the Burton Custom quickly became one of the brand’s most iconic models. Its success is based on a simple idea: to offer a board that is high-performing enough for expert riders, yet versatile enough not to be limited to a single discipline.

Since its launch, the Custom has constantly evolved. Burton has refined its core, fibres, reinforcements and camber profiles while maintaining its central positioning: a board built to ride the whole mountain with a strong freestyle dimension.

Which Burton Custom should you choose for carving?

For an experienced snowboarder looking for maximum precision and grip on piste, the Burton Custom X is the highest-performing choice. Its firm flex, traditional camber and reinforced construction provide greater stability and power as speed increases.

The Burton Custom is nevertheless a more balanced option. It already allows you to carve very effectively while remaining more versatile, more playful and less physically demanding than the Custom X.

The Burton Custom Flying V can also lay down great turns, but its hybrid profile offers less precision and less edge lock. It should be chosen for its forgiveness and versatility, not for a carving-focused riding style.
