Backpack Buyer’s Guide
To make a good backpack, it takes more than putting two straps on any bag. Today's backpacks, whether they are technical models for mountains activities or urban models, have all been through the R&D labs of major brands. The mission of designers? To offer high-tech, lightweight, and highly functional products. Just take a closer look at one of them to discover all the technology it contains. Let's review the many models available on the market.
Choosing the Right Hiking Backpack
A hiking backpack opens the doors to nature wide. With it, you can set off on an adventure for a few hours, an entire day, 2 days, or even a trekking backpack for multi-day outings. Major brands on the outdoor industry compete to offer ever more comfortable backpacks. Straps are generously padded to avoid pressure points on the shoulders, back panels are increasingly well ventilated, and chest straps and hip belts prevent unwanted movement and transfer part of the load to the hips to reduce fatigue.
In terms of functionality, it's important to look closely at the different models as there are many options that vary from one brand to another, such as the presence of a waterproof rain cover. However, it's worth noting the generalisation of routings for a water bladder hose to stay hydrated without having to put the pack down, as well as pole holder systems to keep your hands free when needed.
We also would like to draw your attention to the different opening systems and other zippered pockets. A bottom opening or a complete side opening can sometimes be a game-changer and save precious time.

What is a Ski Backpack?
Whether it's from Dakine, Arva, or K2, technical backpacks must meet very strict criteria. They must, for example, be as light as possible and offer exemplary carrying comfort as days in the mountains can be long and challenging, every gram saved counts. They must also be extremely durable to withstand abrasion and the harshest winter weather conditions. And of course, technical ski backpacks must be more practical than any others. Indeed, this is where significant progress has been made in recent years. We've seen the emergence of ingenious ski and snowboard carrying systems as well as ice axe holders and specific compartments for helmets and avalanche shovels. Some models are also equipped with daisy chains and gear loops to attach carabiners and other useful equipment for mountaineering or glacier hiking, and most are now compatible with hydration systems like water bladders. Brands such as ABS even offer ski backpacks designed to accommodate an avalanche airbag system. And if you ski aggressively and are looking for maximum protection, opt for backpacks with integrated back protectors like those from Evoc. Now, all you have to do is choose the volume or capacity that best suits your needs. If you're going out for the day, it's better to stick to a ski backpack of less than 20 litres. It will be light while being more than sufficient to carry what you need. Smaller models can even be kept on your back during chairlift rides. But if you're planning multi-day ski touring trips, you'll appreciate the generous capacity of 30 to 35-litre ski backpacks that allow you to carry spare clothing and a substantial snack to refuel during the day and get dry in the evening at the refuge.

Which Backpack to Choose for the City?
Technical backpacks are great for the mountains but a bit overkill in a city environment. Major outdoor brands have understood this well and now offer their models in casual and stylish street versions. These urban backpacks are generally feature numerous padded pockets that provide very good protection for valuables such as smartphones or tablets, and a dedicated laptop compartment. These models are perfect as school backpacks but this doesn't stop them from being suitable for day trips if feel like getting some fresh air in the evening or over the weekend.
All you have to do is choose your favourite brand and colour and take your school backpack with you everywhere.
