Lithium, Ducan or Aenergy: which Mammut backpack should you choose for hiking?
The Lithium and Ducan ranges overlap across much of their intended use: both are primarily hiking backpacks available in several capacities. It would therefore be too simplistic to describe one range as comfortable and the other as ventilated, as both feature carry, ventilation and hydration solutions suited to walking, depending on the model. Your choice should mainly depend on the required volume, the pack’s organisation and the features included with each model.
- Lithium: the range spans capacities from 20 to 40 L. The Lithium 20 is suitable for outings with a compact load, while the 30 and 40 L versions provide more room for clothing and equipment. Women-specific versions are also available in selected capacities, with carry systems tailored to the female anatomy.
- Ducan: the 22, 26 and 32 L models also cover a variety of hiking requirements. The Ducan 22 is particularly suitable for hikes and lightweight treks, while the larger capacities accommodate more gear. Explore the Mammut Ducan range.
- Aenergy 12: this model takes a different approach, with a capacity of just 12 L and a weight of 280 g. It is designed for fast hiking and can also be used for trail running, while remaining hydration-system compatible. Its low capacity is ideal for outings where minimising weight and bulk is the main priority.
Nirvana or Trion: which Mammut pack is best for skiing and mountain use?
The distinction is much clearer here. Nirvana backpacks are built around skiing and freeriding, while the Trion 28 remains suitable for ski touring but adds the features required for more technical alpine pursuits.
- Nirvana: the 18, 22 and 28 L capacities allow you to select a pack according to the amount of equipment you need to carry. Depending on the model, features include a dedicated shovel and probe compartment, ski carry options, a helmet carrier and rear access to the main compartment. The Nirvana 18 can also carry a snowboard. Several capacities are available in Women-specific versions.
- Trion 28: its ice axe holdfer, rope holder, ski carry system and avalanche safety equipment compartment make it ideal for mountaineering, climbing and ski touring. It is better suited to trips where technical gear extends beyond skis and snow safety equipment.
For these disciplines, explore our selection of ski touring backpacks.
Which Mammut backpack is best for everyday use and easy hikes?
The Alto 18, 22 and 24 occupy a different position within the Mammut range. They are designed for a combination of everyday travel, short breaks and lightweight hiking, without the specialised features found on the Nirvana or Trion. The Alto 22 perfectly illustrates this versatility with a compartment for a 15-inch laptop, two side pockets and a walking pole holder: practical features for both urban use and easy outdoor excursions.
Which Mammut Cargo bag should you choose for travel and carrying equipment?
Cargo bags differ from conventional hiking backpacks. These travel duffel bags are designed for easy loading of luggage or equipment, with a wide opening and capacities ranging from compact to extra-large models. Their removable shoulder straps allow them to be carried as backpacks, so you do not have to rely solely on the grab handles over longer distances.
This design also makes them easy to handle. Depending on the model, Cargo bags feature handles on several sides and compression straps to secure the contents. The Cargo 50 and 70 also feature a water-repellent ripstop upper and a waterproof heat-bonded base, two useful details when the bag is put down or handled in conditions less clean than a straightforward urban journey.
The various capacities primarily correspond to the amount of kit being transported: a smaller Cargo is suitable for a short break, while the larger versions are better suited to extended travel, expeditions or carrying bulky equipment.
What is the difference between a Cargo and the Wheeled Cargo 45?
The Wheeled Cargo 45 is based on the same duffel concept but adds large wheels, a telescopic handle and a reinforced polycarbonate shell. It can therefore be rolled like wheeled luggage when the surface allows, while retaining removable shoulder straps for backpack carry on stairs, along platforms or whenever the wheels become less practical. Of all the models in this selection, it is the one most specifically designed for travel and connecting journeys.
