Patagonia, "We’re in business to save our home planet"

Patagonia is an outdoor clothing brand established in 1973 in California by Yvon Chouinard. B-Corp certified the company is recognized both for the quality of its products and its environmental activism.

Patagonia uses the best quality and most eco-friendly materials: hemp; recycled organic cotton (as soon as 1996, 100% of the sportswear range is made out of organic or recycled cotton), recycled nylon, polyester and even down. It was the first brand to manufacture fleeces from recycled plastic bottles. This season, 76% of the range is Fair Trade Certified and almost 70% of all materials used are made from recycled elements.

Patagonia uses its voice and notoriety to plead in favour of environmental policies capable of protecting populations, having leaders face their responsibilities and supporting actions positive for the climate. Since 1985, Patagonia dedicates 1% of its revenue to environmental preservation and has donated over 100 million dollars to environmental organizations worldwide. In 2018, Patagonia has launched Patagonia Action Works, an online platform aiming to connect citizens wishing to get involved with organizations working on the field.

Since it has been launched Patagonia Action Works has supported over 170 000 initiatives and generated 9 000 hours of skilled volunteer work to organizations. This tool has also allowed hundreds of non-profits to raise new donations, obtain new signatures in favour of their petitions and recruit new members. In the meantime, Patagonia has set itself the goal to be carbon neutral as soon as 2025, and this for the whole scope of its operations, production line included.

Where does the Patagonia logo come from?

The Patagonia logo very much reflects the name, it represents the skyline of the Cerro Fitz Roy mountains, located above the city of El Chaltén in the south of Argentina, in Patagonia.

What is the story behind Patagonia?

Before becoming one of the main actors in the outdoor market and a brand with a deeply rooted ecological stand, Patagonia has gone a long way and has undergone several significant and beautiful changes. Patagonia’s adventure is intertwined with the story of its founder Yvon Chouinard, a dedicated climber who spent his youth relentlessly exploring the most epic cliffs of the USA. We are in 1953, he is only 14 years old. The rock-climbing gear of the era has its limits. The softer steel pitons, that were disposable, are not suited at all to the massive faces of the Yosemite. Yvon Chouinard then starts the homemade manufacturing of reusable pitons out of hard steel. Word of mouth spreads quickly and his gear soon founds a following. Meeting such a success and facing a growing demand he has to improve his tooling and starts using more advanced machines, industrializing his workshop. In 1965 he partners with aeronautical engineer Tom Frost who will help him mass produce quality equipment with an efficient and slick design. Chouinard Equipment is born. As soon as 1970, while rock-climbing enjoys a boom Yvon Chouinard realises that the use of hard steel pitons damages cliffs.

The company then modifies totally its production line and creates aluminium protections that can be inserted without being hammered in the rock and are easy to remove. Results come fast, the protections sell quicker than they can be produced by Chouinard Equipment’s workshop.

The 70’s are also an era of revolution in outdoor sports garments which were mostly made out of cotton, a breathing fabric but with low thermal proprieties and the nasty tendency to freeze in the cold when wet. Renamed on the clothing market for obvious marketing reasons the Patagonia brand launches in 1980 the first synthetic piece of underwear made from polypropylene. Shortly after, a revolutionary soft fleece sees the light of day, the now legendary Synchilla. In 1985 Patagonia innovates once again and replaces polypropylene by a Capilene treated polyester, a fabric more durable to machine washes, offering optimum thermoregulation.

The beginning of the 80’s is a major turning point for the brand as well with the launch of colourful and bright clothing far away from the greens and browns that are industry standards at the time. Once again success comes fast and Patagonia knows one the most spectacular growth among sports brands in the United States. The company stands apart by the way it is ran, accommodating the working hours of the employees so that they can enjoy their favourite outdoor activities: climbing, running, surfing, skiing and so on.

In the late 80’s Patagonia takes a stand in favour of the environment with tangible measures like giving 1% of its revenue to militant environmental organizations through the 1% for the Planet movement. In the meantime, the American brand develops the recycled polyester for all its output on the Synchilla fleece range. Ever since it does not cease to innovate aiming to protect nature, the playing ground of its devoted customers. From 1996 onwards organic cotton becomes the norm. Other green fabrics make their appearances as well such as hemp, recycled nylon or recycled wool. The study and the decrease of the ecological impact in the manufacturing process is a major priority for Patagonia.

Nowadays Patagonia remains a brand dedicated to environmental preservation. It campaigns actively and supports numerous initiatives. The products speak for it, be it uber technical or lifestyle pieces, either for mountain or marine environments (Patagonia has launched a surfing range including wetsuits made from natural rubber). All the equipment is top notch quality and suited for high altitude expeditions as well as everyday use. Patagonia is B-Corporation certified with an excellent grade, a testimony to the brand’s strict code of conduct.

Where are Patagonia clothes made?

Most of Patagonia's products are made in China, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, the company's products are manufactured in 40 factories across a total of 16 countries. Since the 1990s, Patagonia has actively taken steps to maintain awareness of its supply chain.
