Leggings, jeans, what are the best rock climbing pants?
Rock climbing requires a suitable outfit, both for the upper and lower parts of your body. In all cases, what is of prime importance and you need the most, is freedom of movement. Both when climbing in gyms or outdoors, the movements executed are close to contortion, especially for bouldering or very technical routes. This is the reason why your climbing clothes must absolutely not hinder or limit your mobility. In the meantime, the advantage of climbing pants, compared to shorts, is that they totally cover the legs to avoid scratching them on the face you are progressing on, and to protect you from sunburns. Climbing trousers are manufactured in abrasion resistant materials, with reinforcements at key areas such as the knees. To avoid being too hot, they are made of a light and breathable fabric, that does not trap sweat. Their fit is preferably tailored because pants that are too loose could restrain your movements, induce chafing, get caught in holds, be uncomfortable with a harness, etc. Several climbing pant types exist: models with a technical look for performance-oriented climbers, models similar to jeans or chinos to climb in style, or even leggings for people looking for a minimalist outfit. Beyond the materials, the fit and the features of climbing pants, your choice can be motivated by the way you climb: bouldering, route climbing, indoors, outdoors, 3 seasons, 4 seasons, …, and of course depending on your clothing tastes.
