How Does a Camping Solar Shower Work?
The camping solar shower works simply by harnessing sunlight, particularly infrared rays. When these rays hit a black surface, they transfer all their energy to the object, naturally heating the water inside. To do this, just place the solar shower reservoir outside in direct sunlight: on your vehicle's roof, behind the windshield, or next to you on the beach. After several hours of exposure, the water inside will be perfectly warm.
The Winning Combo: Water Heater + Shower Head
Some solar shower models combine a sun-heated water tank with a pressure booster system. By activating a foot pump, you increase the pressure in the reservoir and get a real hot shower, just like at home. The hose and shower head allow you to wash even with the reservoir placed on the ground below you. More expensive than simple black tanks that always need to be elevated, these pressurized water heater showers provide real comfort for bivouac and camping.
Which Capacity to Choose: 7L, 11L, 20L?
The right capacity mainly depends on the number of people. For one person, a 7-liter reservoir is more than enough. For two people, 7 liters might be a bit tight if you want a thorough wash, so it's better to go for an 11-liter tank. As for 20-liter reservoirs, they're ideal for large families or those who love to unwind under hot water. A larger tank also means you need to refill it less often and can use it for two days in a row.
Easy to Transport for Travel or Bivouac
When empty and compressed, a solar shower reservoir takes up almost no space. It can be rolled up and easily stored in a vehicle, whether it's a car or a van. Once filled, however, it will occupy the stated volume. After your shower, you can either empty the tank completely to compress it again, or keep the remaining water and top it up the next morning before heating it at the start of the day.
