The ideal jacket for alpine skiing
Essential for your comfort, your skiing wear must allow you to make the most of your time on the slopes without restricting your freedom of movement. On the slopes, given the alternation between descents and chairlift rides often exposed to the wind, we recommend choosing a ski jacket with excellent insulation against the cold.
The importance of membranes
A ski coat must be built around a waterproof and breathable membrane to protect you from moisture while regulating your body heat. Whether it’s a snowboard jacket, an alpine ski coat or a touring model, it should be insulating, waterproof and breathable. That way, whatever happens on the slopes and whatever the weather – wind, rain or snow – you’ll stay warm and dry all day long.
Gore-Tex technology
The days are gone when parkas kept out the rain but trapped heat inside. The secret lies in the type of membrane each jacket uses. The most famous of all is undoubtedly Gore-Tex, which introduced the first micro-perforated Teflon-based fabric. By precisely controlling the size of the pores in the material, Gore-Tex discovered the secret to the perfect ski garment. Water droplets from outside are too large to pass through the micro-perforations, while warm, moist air molecules can escape. Another advantage of this technology is that it makes the fabric windproof.
Other types of membranes
In recent years, leading ski and outdoor clothing brands have developed their own waterproof and breathable membranes, some of which are just as effective as Gore-Tex. For instance, Picture has widely adopted its Dryplay membranes across nearly all its ski and snowboard jackets.
