Which coat should you choose for piste skiing?
Your ski wear is essential to make the most of your time in the resort. On the slopes, with phases of descending and using chairlifts that are sometimes very exposed to the wind, we recommend choosing a ski jacket with good insulation against the cold. However, your coat shouldn’t be exclusively warm, otherwise, you might as well just choose a down jacket and settle for that.
What Level of Waterproofness Should You Opt For?
A ski jacket needs to be designed with a waterproof-breathable membrane to keep you protected from dampness while regulating your body heat. Whether it’s a snowboard jacket, alpine ski jacket, or ski touring jacket, it must be insulating, waterproof and breathable. This ensures that no matter what happens on the slopes, whether it's windy, raining, or snowing, you stay warm and dry all day long.
Gore-Tex Technology
Gone are the days when rain parkas kept us dry but turned us into a sauna. The secret lies in the type of membranes used in these jackets. The most well-known is undoubtedly Gore-Tex, the company that introduced the very first micro-perforated fabric made of Teflon. By precisely controlling the size of the holes in its material, Gore-Tex discovered the secret to the perfect ski garment. Water droplets from the outside are too large to pass through the micro-perforations, while warm, moisture-laden air molecules can escape to the outside. Another feature of this technology is that it allows the fabric to remain windproof.
Other Types of Membranes
In recent years, major ski wear and outdoor brands have developed their own waterproof-breathable membranes. Some are just as effective as Gore-Tex. For example, Dryplay membranes, which the brand Picture has integrated into almost all its snowboard and ski jackets. What are the advantages of a women's snowboard jacket?
Various equipment manufacturers combine technologies to protect you from wind, snow, sleet, and rain.
