Why do you need dedicated climbing shoes?
In the past, climbers used to climb rock walls wearing simple hiking shoes, but we can thank climber Pierre Allain, who was one of the first to insert a rubber sole under a pair of espadrilles for better grip on the rock. Today, climbing shoes are an essential tool for climbers. Due to their design and the materials used, climbing shoes offer:
- Effective grip
- Optimal foot placement
- Versatility
- Adaptation to your climbing style
Criteria for Selecting Climbing Shoes
Level: Beginner or Advanced?
First and foremost, your skill level will likely determine the type of climbing shoes you should choose. A beginner climber will tend to opt for comfortable shoes with a non-restrictive shape, such as the Black Diamond Momentum. With its symmetrical and flat shape, it is an ideal rock shoe for those starting in the sport. Whether at crags, indoor climbing facilities, or bouldering spots, it will follow you everywhere. Its attractive price is also a plus!
On the other hand, advanced climbers, while they may own a pair of flat climbing shoes for less intense sessions, will generally prefer a shoe with a strong downturn, providing the efficiency and performance needed to push their limits.
Which Shoes for Indoor, Sport, Multi-pitch Climbing or Bouldering?
Another criterion is the type of climbing you do, which will also determine the type of shoes to target. Although, contrary to popular belief, a climbing shoe can be versatile (depending on your expectations), climbing shoe manufacturers design shoes specifically for each type of climbing, whether on an indoor climbing wall or natural crag. As a consequence, rather than thinking ‘type of climbing’, you should consider:
Intensity:
Whether it is occasional or intensive, be aware that slip-on shoes wear out quickly and are not suitable for outdoor use.
Terrain:
If you want to progress on overhangs, you will need more cambered shoes, whereas someone wanting to start multi-pitch climbing will prefer stiffer shoes.
Technicality
Several parameters are considered when discussing the technicality of a climbing shoe. Heel tension, asymmetry, camber or downturn, and the composition of the upper are all elements characterising a climbing shoe. However, your shoe will belong only to you. Regardless of what the manufacturer claims, you should judge based on your own sensations to determine if it suits your climbing style.
Closure Systems, the Advantage of Velcro
Its importance may seem secondary, but closure fastening system will be crucial once you're on the route. Glisshop offers women's climbing shoes that use Velcro. Lace-up shoes are quicker to put on. Simple, double, or S-shaped Velcro, there are many ways to enhance your performance during your training.
What Size to Choose for Your Climbing Shoes?
Forget the old advice that suggests choosing 2 to 3 sizes smaller than your actual size. Although the size of your climbing shoes is important for your progression, there's no need to push this theory to the extreme.
Simply ensure you choose shoes that don't slip, neither forward nor backward, nor to the sides. They should, within reason, fit the shape of your foot to allow for a good push when needed most. Whether your foot is narrow, wide, or uniquely shaped, it will need a suitable climbing shoe for comfort as well. In short, don't listen too much to hearsay and go with your sensations. Even if the size of your shoe may be slightly smaller than your usual size (most often for soft leather models), it can be the same for other types of shoes.
