What rope diameter for indoor climbing, crag, mountaineering (7.7 mm, 9 mm, 10 mm...)?
The choice of rope diameter is never random. It must match your activity (indoor, multi-pitch, mountaineering, ice climbing, etc.).
For indoor climbing, a single rope with a diameter of at least 10 mm is ideal, especially if it features a reinforced sheath to withstand intensive top-rope use. Weight is not a major factor for this type of climbing. The length should be twice the height of the wall to ensure optimal safety. For outdoor sport climbing, a single rope of 70 to 80 m is recommended, with a diameter between 9 mm and 10.2 mm. Experienced climbers often prefer thinner ropes for lighter weight and smoother handling, though these require more careful use.
For multi-pitch routes and rock mountaineering, a half rope with a diameter of 8 to 9 mm and a length of 50 to 70 m helps reduce weight while remaining practical, even on complex routes.
Finally, for ice climbing, a half rope around 8 to 9 mm with a hydrophobic treatment to resist moisture is essential. In all cases, it's crucial to check that your rope diameter is compatible with your belay device to ensure effective braking and safe use.
What rope length for indoor and outdoor climbing?
The rope length should match your activity and the sites where you climb. For sport climbing on crags, a dynamic rope of 70 to 80 m is ideal, as it covers most route lengths.
On the other hand, if you climb indoors or on small crags, shorter ropes of 40 to 50 m may be sufficient. Always consider your climbing style and the specifics of your locations to make the right choice.
