Millet Gore-Tex Hiking Boots: Waterproof and Breathable
While a boot that is both waterproof and breathable used to be the dream of many outdoor sports enthusiasts, it is now a reality since the advent of the first Gore-Tex membrane and all the new membranes from other manufacturers that followed. Millet has developed its own Dry Edge membrane for some of its products, a very effective breathable membrane. However, the brand mainly offers the historic Gore-Tex membrane on almost all its hiking footwear models. Millet thus chooses the most waterproof membrane on the market, available in different versions with different levels of breathability to meet the specificities of each sport. The shoes equipped with a Gore-Tex membrane have the term GTX in their name. Millet also offers a range of ultra-breathable hiking shoes and boots without a membrane designed for summer hiking.
Choosing the Right Millet Hiking Boots According to Your Activity: Backpacking, Trail, Day Hikes
Choosing the right shoe requires identifying what are your goals. Indeed, a 15-day trek doesn’t required the same model as a short day hike.
The stiffness of Millet hiking shoes and boots depends on the model. The most flexible shoes are perfect for easy day hikes or for longer but less technical hikes. They offer a very natural foot roll. In this category, you’ll find the Millet Hike Up or the Light Rush, for instance. Whereas stiffer models smooth out the terrain and offer more precision and better support in technical sections. This is the case, for example, of the Super Trident approach shoe.
Lugs and tread patterns are also an important point for grip on loose terrain, both on sand and in mud. If you are hiking on fast-rolling paths, your need for grip is minimal; however, on rugged mountain trails, good lugs provide the required grip on steep gradients.
As for waterproofness, if you are hiking for several days, it's better to opt for waterproof and breathable Millet shoes or boots, designed with a Gore-Tex membrane. This way, you can face potential storms, river crossings, and morning dew while keeping your feet dry. However, if you only walk in the summer in dry weather, you can very well choose a pair of hiking shoes without a membrane to enjoy maximum breathability.
Which Cuff Height to Choose: Low, Mid, High?
This is a frequently asked question. The choice is quite personal. Some people can't stand walking with high-ankle boots, while others can't hike with low-cut shoes. Practically, a high-ankle hiking boot provides better ankle support and reduces the risk of sprains. If you have flexible or even hyper lax ankles, it's better to opt for high-ankle boots. Low-cut shoes are much more like trail running shoes. They will be lighter. For the best of both worlds, there is a whole range of mid-cut boots that provide better support than a low-cut, without the discomfort some walkers might feel with a high-ankle model.
