Racing Protections Buyer’s Guide
When stepping into the world of competitive skiing, especially slalom, it’s essential to have certified and properly fitted protections. They must be highly durable while minimising air resistance. At Glisshop, our ski experts have selected shin guards, forearm guards, and pole hand guards from the best manufacturers in the industry.
How to Choose Shin Guards for Competitive Skiing
The term "slalom" originates from Telemark, a region in southern Norway, but the first official slalom race took place in Mürren, Switzerland, in 1922. The goal was simple: descend the slope as quickly as possible while executing tight turns between red and blue poles representing virtual gates. Racers must pass through every gate without straddling a pole, ensuring their ski tips always stay on the same side of the pole.
To achieve the best time, the solution is clear: maximise speed, execute the tightest turns possible, and powerfully accelerate out of each turn. This involves hitting the poles hard with your legs at every gate. This is where shin guards come into play. These racing protections prevent injuries in slalom and allow you to focus on your trajectory. At Glisshop, we’ve selected shin guards from world-leading brands like Rossignol and Leki. They are lightweight and fit securely around the leg using elastic Velcro straps. Available in one size, they are suitable for demanding athletes of all genders. These guards are made from polypropylene, a durable, hard plastic capable of withstanding repeated impacts, even in cold weather.
Looking for Hand Guards for Your Poles?
If you want to emulate world champions and stand on the top step of the podium, you’ll also need to hit the gates with your poles. To avoid injury, it’s essential to use appropriate hand guards. These accessories attach to the pole’s handle, providing effective protection. Your fingers and knuckles remain fully shielded, even when poles hit violently. No matter which brand of hand guard you choose, you’ll benefit from top-tier aerodynamics that minimise drag and help shave precious seconds off your time. Thanks to the research and development teams at Leki and Rossignol, including their wind tunnel testing, you’ll get cutting-edge performance.
What About Forearm Guards?
In slalom, skiers’ forearms also endure significant impacts from poles, especially when taking tight lines. To protect this part of the body, forearm guards are essential. Made from durable materials such as polyamide or plastic composites, these guards attach directly to the forearms, usually with adjustable Velcro straps for a secure fit. Lightweight and streamlined, they don’t hinder a skier’s movement and reduce aerodynamic drag. Brands like Dainese and Komperdell offer models specifically designed to absorb impacts without compromising range of motion. Essential for preventing bruises and ensuring a smooth performance, forearm guards allow skiers to focus entirely on their run.
