The Salomon Brand: A History

When Georges Salomon opened his workshop for manufacturing saw blades and ski edges in Annecy in 1947, he had no idea of the incredible journey that lay ahead. A natural innovator, he revolutionized ski edge production in 1948 with in-house automatic machines capable of mass production. Around the same time, the company introduced its first cable bindings.

As Salomon grew, the original workshop in old Annecy became too small, prompting a move to larger premises in Annecy. By 1957, the research office was buzzing with ideas, leading to iconic innovations like the Skade—the first safety toe piece—and the Lift, the first ski binding to render strap systems obsolete. In 1961, the company renamed the model after champion Emile Allais, who quickly adopted it.

As exports soared, Salomon's facilities had to expand again within Annecy to accommodate demand. A breakthrough came in 1966 with the development of the first automatic heel-release binding, making skiing safer and more appealing to the general public. These revolutionary bindings debuted at the Alpine Ski World Championships in Portillo, Chile.

Following this success, Salomon established subsidiaries throughout Europe to meet the growing market demand, opening branches in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Italy. By 1972, Salomon had become the world's number one ski binding manufacturer, selling over a million pairs in one year.

Having mastered ski bindings, Salomon ventured into ski boots. After years of development, they launched their first rear-entry ski boots in 1979. Alongside their success in alpine skiing, Salomon also made strides in Nordic skiing, unveiling a revolutionary cross-country system in France and Sweden during the 1979-1980 season.

In 1985, Salomon established new headquarters in Metz-Tessy near Annecy, with annual revenue exceeding €250 million. Just five years later, the brand introduced its first ski, the S9000, which quickly gained popularity. Over a decade, Salomon produced nearly 10 million alpine ski boots and 5 million cross-country boots.

Salomon skis made their Olympic debut at the 1992 Albertville Games, cementing the brand’s reputation. The 1990s also marked Salomon’s foray into outdoor sports, with lightweight and high-performance hiking footwear.

In 1997, the brand entered the snowboarding market, offering a complete range of boards, bindings, and boots. Throughout the 2000s, Salomon expanded its outdoor product line, partnering with Kilian Jornet, who won the 170 km UTMB in just 20 hours, boosting the brand’s prominence in trail running.

Salomon continued innovating, introducing the Quest Boots in 2011, featuring a ski/walk mechanism that released the cuff for better mobility. This technology elevated comfort in winter sports. Over time, Salomon received numerous accolades, including the Best Overall Ski Manufacturer award at the 2013 World Snow Awards. The brand was also recognized as the Best Goggles Manufacturer and awarded for Best Women's Snowboard in 2012.
