In need of advice to choose snowshoe hiking poles?

There are, in numerous ski resorts, dedicated areas to enjoy snowshoeing. It can be proper trails, sometimes groomed and wide enough to walk side by side. There are also narrow paths where people walk in a single file. You only have to follow the signs put in place and enjoy the hike, on flat terrain, slopes, in the woods and all the way to open ridges. For those looking to be out in the wild, to follow their own route, far away from resorts, off the beaten tracks, the mountains offer numerous opportunities to get to areas with plenty of powder but where the risks of avalanche must not be neglected. No matter the type of hike you anticipate to do, after the choice of snowshoes comes the choice of poles. They are important items to guaranty the best conditions for your hikes. If you follow the tracks of the one preceding you on waymarked trails or you are going in the backcountry to step on virgin snow, having poles is indeed a necessity for snowshoeing. While they of course, allow to keep your balance, they are vital in ascents with a medium or steep gradient. They are as valuable in the descents as in steep-sided traverses.

While there are snowshoeing fixed poles, similar to the ones used for alpine skiing, you can also find a number of poles that can be adjusted in length. They are foldable, telescopic, in several sections, and some mix the various solutions. As they are adjustable to the hiker’s height but according to the terrain as well, they are particularly useful for snowshoeing. At Glisshop, we must confess, we prefer snowshoe hiking telescopic poles that can be easily adjusted for the ascents and descents. We therefore offer various models that, without exception, answer the need for very good stability no matter the type of snow.

Snowshoeing poles

To make sure you can progress on snowy terrains, Glisshop has made sure that each snowshoe pole is equipped with wide snow baskets. They ensure its float and prevent it from sinking deeply in powder, enabling the pole to provide stability. Another element to consider regarding poles, both for fixed-length or adjustable ones, are the grips. They should, preferably be ergonomic to be easy to manipulate with gloves or mittens. There are poles featuring a lower grip extension allowing to change hand positions according to the steepness of the slope or how deep the poles go into the snow.
