Oakley Prizm lenses buyer’s guide
All Oakley sunglasses meet the highest standards of quality and safety, as the brand has a partnership with the US army, which is very demanding in terms of lens, visual clarity and impact resistance. Here is a chart presenting all Prizm lenses, which can be classified in two categories: the ones designed for a specific sport, and the ones more versatile, for all conditions.
The light transmission levels and lens categories of the Prizm range are as follow: most of the Prizm line is category 3 and the Prizm Road, Trail et Golf lenses are category 2.
All Oakley lenses are made of polycarbonate, a material that is lighter and stronger than glass. They can be used as such with their base tint or be enhanced with the following options: iridium, polarisation, photochromy or Prizm technology. Iridium is a mirror filter that reduces the amount of light and improves the versatility. Polarisation removes reflections and limits glare on highly reverberating surfaces such as snow or water.
In addition to these options, photochromy or Prizm technology can be added. Prizm technology was first developed for snow goggles lenses for its resistance to the cold and versatility in unsettled weather conditions. Today, Prizm is featured on 80% of Oakley sunglasses. To sum it up, Prizm technology boosts or filters some colours of the light spectrum, which enhances colours and contrasts in uniform environments. Their versatility allows to quickly go from shade to light, as during a trail run in the forest, for example, with short sections in bright clearings. On golf courses, Prizm enhances the shades of green. On the road, it improves your perception of tarmac and its irregularities. For water sports, polarisation is added to Prizm, as reverberation is always strong on water. Finally, for daily use, the Daily Prizm lens is a good option, which works well for driving too.
