Ortovox

The Ortovox brand took off in 1980 when Gerald Kampel and Jürgen Wegner joined forces to launch the very first dual-frequency DVA ORTOVOX F2 device, a revolutionary avalanche victim detection beacon that immediately over-classified all the old DVA devices that were incompatible with each other. The F2 was the only device capable of detecting the different frequencies used at the time. Two years were enough for Ortovox to be propelled to number 1 in the field of DVA.

A few years later, the brand completed its offer with a first Ortovox backpack dedicated to skiing, a light and robust snow shovel and a foldable snow probe. In 1988, Ortovox decided to use wool to make a whole range of top-of-the-range technical clothing such as fleeces and ski jackets. We then rediscover the benefits of wool, a natural and renewable product, very soft to the touch, which dries quickly, remains warm even when wet and has the unique characteristic of being naturally anti-bacterial and therefore anti-odour.

Ortovox's research and development department then went on to develop increasingly high-performance DVAs such as the Ortovox F1 Classic DVA in 1989 with integrated loudspeaker and the Ortovox F1 Plus the following year, the very first avalanche detector equipped with an LED.

But the brand's iconic model is undoubtedly the DVA F1 Focus and its intuitive three-lit green, yellow and red arrow that greatly improved the efficiency of the search. An incredible commercial success, F1 is so far the best-selling DVA in the world.

In parallel, Ortovox is constantly improving its technical clothing based on wool and launched in 1995 a collection of technical underwear made of merino wool, which was very quickly acclaimed by all mountain dwellers and enthusiastic sportsmen. Imagine technical underwear of incredible softness that can be worn for a whole week without ever changing it: alchemy, quite simply!

In 1996, Ortovox took a new interest in the technical backpack and took advantage of the experience of the famous mountaineer Hans Kammerlander to market the X-light, a lightweight bag that weighs just 380 grams on the scale.

Ortovox will take the digital turn in 1998 with the Ortovox M1, the first analogue digital compatible DVA and with the DVA M2 the following year even faster and more intuitive. Innovation at Ortovox then took off at a frenetic pace with the launch in 2002 of the DVA X1, the first device with direction indication and automatic management of the two antennas. No more manual calibration of the signal reception, now everything is automatic for a time saving never seen before.

The Ortovox 3+ will then take over in 2010 with its 3 antennas and smart antenna technology that always allows the best positioned antenna to be used to avoid inaccurate reception. This Ortovox DVA is even equipped with a RECCO pad, a recognition system used by first aid patrollers in all major resorts in Europe.

The latest DVA to date of the brand is the Ortovox S1+, a stylish device similar to a clamshell phone also equipped with Smart Antenna technology. Ortovox is also a total involvement in the field of mountain safety with a dedicated site awarded to the ISPO in winter 2015: the laboratory of the Safety Academy. This site explains all avalanche search and rescue techniques so that everyone can learn the theoretical basics before venturing off-piste.

Today Ortovox offers a complete mountain safety offer for fans of powder snow and large open spaces with a wide range of snow shovels and probes as well as a beautiful collection of Ortovox airbags!
