Scarpa

Innovation and tradition are deeply rooted in SCARPA’s DNA. To this day, the brand remains family-owned and its headquarters and productions units are still established in the same region of Northern Italy, were SCARPA started making performance footwear in 1938.



Founded in the foothills of the Dolomites, in the Asolo / Montebelluna region, an area long known for quality shoe making, SCARPA’s first mission was to gather the best shoe maker of the Asolo region in order to manufacture the best shoes in the world. SCARPA means Società Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonim, which translates to Joint Venture Shoe Making Company of the Asolo Mountain Zone.



Immersed in this tradition of craftsmanship and heritage, Luigi Parisotto started to learn the art of quality shoe making before finally buying the company with his brothers, turning it into a family business. Parisotto started to learn his trade at the age of 11 in 1940 and worked for SCARPA in 1942. From the very beginning, Parisotto loved the craftsmanship involved in traditional shoe making and ran his own company, S. Giorgio, in the early 1950 with his brothers. Producing between 4 to 15 pairs of shoes a day. They were sold to local farmers looking for shoes that were both comfortable and extremely durable.



In 1956, Parisotto and three of his brothers with the help of their family, gathered enough money to make an offer to SCARPA. The offer was accepted and the company quickly developed under their management to employ 17 expert shoe makers, it grew during these first years to produce 50 to 60 pairs a day. At the end of the 1950’s, word of SCARPA’s quality spread outside the Montebelluna region and attracted clients from numerous other regions in Northern Italy.

Scarpa’s story continues:

The company was one of the first to identify the needs of the mountaineering and climbing culture that emerged at the time in Northern Italy, and to develop shoes and boots with features dedicated to these activities. These technical details, as well as the brand’s legendary durability and fit have encouraged numerous Italian alpinists to use SCARPA shoes and boots. In 1965, an Italian American living in Boston started importing SCARPA footwear, making it the first Asolo region based manufacturer to export to the United States.

SCARPA kept on innovating in the 1970’s, developing the popular Rally alpine skiing boot and becoming a pioneer with a plastic mountaineering boot for high-altitude terrain, called Grinta, then Inverno (in North America, the international name being Vega). This boot was used by numerous top-level alpinists and explorers in the Himalayan, Antarctic and was also adopted by Italian, American, French, Spanish and other military forces for extreme conditions.

This pioneering spirit kept on going. The company is responsible for numerous innovations, being the first to produce a Gore-Tex boot and the first to develop a plastic telemark boot, as well as launching the first boot compatible with telemark and alpine touring in 2007.

Today, the new Parisotto generation keeps researching to offer innovative mountain boots. Sandra, Piero, Davide and Cristina Parisotto continue to manage the company to produce the best mountaineering, backpacking, hiking, alpine running, climbing and skiing shoes and boots.

SCARPA opened its North American headquarters in 2005, directed by veterans of the outdoor industry. This followed several decades of managment by distributors in the US and Canada. In collaboration with the Pariosottos, the Boulder, CO location now helps develop products for the United States and Canada and looks over the sales and marketing for North America.

 

Scarpa: a renowned brand for men’s and women’s hiking and mountain shoes and boots
