Auto-locking carabiners

Climbing carabiners allow you to attach all your gear to your harness, set up an anchor, belay the lead climber, or abseil using a descender. Pros of an auto-locking carabiner compared to a screwgate model

Superior handling:

No more tedious screwing and unscrewing of the locking sleeve every time you open the carabiner. With an auto-locking model, you can open and close it single-handedly in seconds.

Enhanced safety:

The auto-locking carabiner has the major advantage of closing and locking itself automatically as soon as you release the gate. The spring-loaded gate snaps back into place, and the integrated 2- or 3-action mechanism ensures a secure closure. You can therefore use any self-locking carabiner that appears closed with confidence, if it looks shut, it is fully locked.

Cons of this type of carabiner

Auto-locking carabiners can be more temperamental in winter conditions, whether in mountaineering or ski touring. The locking sleeve can freeze on the gate, making operation difficult depending on the temperature. For alpine use, it’s often better to stick with traditional screwgate carabiners.

Best uses for an auto-locking carabiner

This type of carabiner is particularly effective as a belay carabiner attached to the belay loop. It saves valuable time when alternating between climber and belayer. It’s a real advantage for indoor climbing. In other situations, the time saved is less critical, and using an auto-locking model doesn’t replace the final safety check before use.

The different types of self-locking carabiners in climbing

Manufacturers such as Petzl, Black Diamond, Beal, Grivel, Edlerid, Ocun and Camp offer several types of auto-locking carabiners. Some feature 2-action systems, while others use 3-action mechanisms.

2-action auto-locking carabiners:

These carabiners open in two steps: first, rotate the sleeve, then pull back the gate. Once released, the gate automatically locks and the sleeve returns to its original position. It’s hard to get more efficient than that.

3-action auto-locking carabiners:

For even greater security, manufacturers have developed 3-action systems. Some models also feature ball-lock mechanisms that require pressing a button before unlocking the sleeve, or dual opposing gate systems for added safety.
