Which water bottle for hiking?

For walks, treks, bivouacs, trail running and outdoor activities, choosing the right bottle is essential. Lightweight water bottle, insulated flask, filter bottle or soft flask: choose according to the length of your outing, refill options and the space available in your pack.

Your requirement The right model
Day hike Lightweight rigid bottle from 750 ml to 1 litre
Cold or hot drink Stainless steel insulated bottle
Refilling in the wild Filter water bottle or water treatment system
Trail running and running Soft flask from 250 to 500 ml
Trekking and bivouacking Lightweight or collapsible high-capacity bottle

Rigid water bottles

Rigid bottles are suitable for hiking, camping and everyday use. They are easy to fill, hard-wearing and available in a wide range of capacities.

For a day out, a 750 ml to 1 litre model generally offers a good balance between autonomy and weight. To carry more water, it can be more practical to spread the load across two bottles rather than using one very large container.

Plastic, aluminium or stainless steel

  • Plastic: lightweight, transparent depending on the model, and economical.
  • Aluminium: light and durable, it is generally paired with a food-grade internal coating that separates the drink from the metal.
  • Stainless steel: robust and corrosion-resistant, it can be used without an internal coating on many models.

The choice of material mainly depends on your priority: minimum weight, durability or temperature retention.

Insulated water bottles

An insulated water bottle is ideal for winter hikes, hot days and outings where you want to keep a drink at the right temperature.

Double-wall stainless steel models can keep drinks cold or hot for several hours. The actual duration, however, depends on the capacity, outside temperature and the performance of the model.

  • Cold drinks during summer hikes
  • Tea, coffee or soup on cold-weather outings
  • Robust construction for regular use

The main trade-off is weight. An insulated bottle is generally heavier than a simple bottle of the same capacity.

Filter water bottles

Filter water bottles are designed for treks, travel and routes where access to drinking water is limited. They allow you to drink from certain natural sources after the water has passed through an integrated filter.

The level of protection varies depending on the technology used. Some filters remove bacteria, protozoa and particles, but not necessarily viruses or chemical contaminants.

Before setting off, always check:

  • which elements the filter removes
  • its lifespan
  • its flow rate
  • the recommended conditions of use

For tablets, separate filters and other purification solutions, visit our water treatment section.

Soft and collapsible bottles

Soft and collapsible bottles are valued for their low weight and compact pack size once empty. They are well suited to trekking, bikepacking and activities where every gram counts.

For hiking and bivouacking, a foldable bottle can be used as an additional water reserve. It packs away easily when no longer needed, but offers less rigidity and impact protection than a conventional model.

Ultra-light soft flasks for trail running

If you are looking for soft bottles to complement your trail running vest, you will find a full range of soft plastic trail flasks in 250 ml, 500 ml and 1 litre sizes. These bladder-style bottles fit easily on the front of your trail vest straps or into the compartments of your running belt. With brands such as TSL, Katadyn, Source, Salomon and Oxsitis, you can enjoy top-quality products and high-grade plastic free from BPA, PVC and phthalates.

Water bottle or hydration bladder

A bottle makes it easy to check how much is left, refill without emptying your pack and clean the container quickly. A hydration bladder makes regular hydration while walking easier thanks to its drinking tube.

  • Water bottle: simple, robust and easy to fill.
  • Hydration bladder: practical for drinking frequently without stopping.
  • Combination of both: useful for separating drinking water from an energy drink or keeping a reserve.

Which capacity should you choose?

Capacity depends on the length of the outing, temperature, level of effort and refill options along the route.

  • 250 to 500 ml: trail running, running or an additional reserve.
  • 750 ml to 1 litre: short hike or outing with regular water points.
  • 1.5 to 2 litres: day hike or hot conditions.
  • More than 2 litres: dry route, bivouac or extended periods without resupply.

These volumes are indicative. Actual needs vary significantly depending on the person and the conditions. On long hikes, distributing water across several containers often improves the balance of your hiking backpack.

Mouth and cap

The type of opening directly affects ease of use:

  • Wide mouth: easy filling and cleaning, with the option to add ice cubes.
  • Narrow mouth: more precise flow for drinking while walking.
  • Sports cap: quick one-handed opening.
  • Integrated straw: practical for trail running and dynamic activities.
  • Cup cap: suited to thermos flasks and hot drinks.

Also check leakproofing and ease of handling with gloves if you are heading out in winter.

FAQ about hiking water bottles

Which water bottle should I choose for hiking?

Choose a lightweight rigid bottle for a standard outing, an insulated flask to maintain temperature, a filter bottle when drinking water is scarce and a collapsible model to reduce bulk.

What capacity should I allow for a day hike?

A total capacity of 1 to 2 litres suits many outings, but it should be adapted to the heat, intensity of effort and available water points.

Which water bottle is the lightest?

Simple plastic models, soft flasks and collapsible bottles are generally the lightest. Insulated stainless steel is heavier, but more robust and offers better insulation.

What is the difference between a filter bottle and a standard bottle?

A standard bottle is used solely for carrying water. A filter bottle incorporates a system designed to reduce certain micro-organisms and impurities present in the water.

Can you drink river water with a filter bottle?

It depends on the filter and the quality of the water. Check which contaminants are treated and avoid water that may be polluted by chemicals, agricultural activity or human waste.

Water bottle or hydration bladder for hiking?

A bottle is easier to fill and clean. A hydration bladder lets you drink regularly without stopping. The choice mainly depends on your set-up and the way you practise your activity.

How do you clean a hiking water bottle?

After each use, clean the bottle with warm water and a little washing-up liquid, removing the cap, straw and seals if possible. Use a brush to reach the bottom and the mouth, then dry all parts.
