How to Size Hiking Boots and Shoes?
To find the right size, you need to measure your feet and identify your stronger foot, as there can sometimes be a half or even a full size difference between your feet. Once you've determined your stronger foot, use the Glisshop foot measuring tool to find your exact size in cm, as well as your foot width. Then, simply refer to each brand’s size chart to find the appropriate fit. If you are between sizes by a few millimetres, it's best to go for the larger size. At Glisshop, we offer a complete range of footwear to suit all foot shapes: from hiking boots for wide feet to boots for narrow feet, as well as more standard models, ensuring you'll find the perfect pair for your foot shape.
Which Boots to Choose for Mountain Hiking?
In the mountains, trails are generally more technical and uneven compared to gentle valley paths. You'll need mountain boots with a protective rand, thick cushioned outsoles to prevent feeling sharp edges on rocky terrain, and extra torsional rigidity to avoid twisting your ankle on stones or roots. Hikers with weak ankles may opt for boots (high-ankle or mid-cut models). However, if weight is your top priority, low-cut hiking shoes may be the best option.
To make the right choice, consider the weight of your backpack, the length, and the duration of your hike. For a one-day mountain walk with a light pack, a pair of lightweight hiking shoes may be sufficient. However, for a multi-day trek, you’ll need boots that provide cushioning and reduce fatigue. For technical day hikes, such as reaching a climbing crag or a mountain hut, you might also consider a pair of approach shoes. These offer secure and precise footing on steep terrain, thanks to grippy outsoles designed for traction on rocky surfaces.
Why Choose Leather Hiking Boots?
Leather hiking boots are often valued for their durability, providing both abrasion resistance and protection against the elements. Leather offers excellent defence against rocky terrain by adding structure to the boot, ensuring better foot support—ideal for long hikes with a heavy pack. Over time, leather softens, adapting to your foot’s shape for greater comfort. Leather also offers some water resistance, but it is not completely waterproof. To keep your feet dry in wet conditions, we recommend hiking boots with a Gore-Tex membrane, which provides the best barrier against moisture. Leather is not indestructible and can wear over time. To extend the lifespan of your boots, check out our guide: How to Care for Your Hiking Boots.
Why Choose Waterproof or Gore-Tex Hiking Boots?
When covering long distances, keeping your feet dry is essential to prevent blisters and other discomforts. Historically, leather hiking boots provided some protection against light rain, but they couldn’t guarantee long-lasting waterproofness in heavy downpours. The invention of the first waterproof-breathable membrane changed everything. This micro-perforated Teflon membrane allows sweat vapour to escape from inside the boot while preventing larger water droplets from entering.

Gore-Tex hiking boots keep your feet breathing while providing an effective barrier against moisture. Many manufacturers have now developed their own waterproof-breathable membranes to optimise production costs. Most modern hiking boots are waterproof and breathable. You can even find warm hiking boots with enhanced insulation for winter hikes.
Why Choose Ultra-Light Hiking Shoes?
Opting for ultra-light hiking shoes means enjoying a smooth and dynamic stride, reducing muscle fatigue. Lighter footwear allows for greater endurance on long distances, especially for those maintaining a fast pace in the mountains. This principle is at the heart of fast hiking, requiring lightweight gear for efficiency without sacrificing comfort. This performance-oriented approach is similar to trail running, where lightness and grip are key for navigating technical terrain.
What Is the Difference Between Hiking Shoes and Trail Running Shoes?
Hiking footwear does not have to be heavy, high-ankle boots. Models come in low-cut, mid-cut, and high-ankle versions, designed for walking varying distances across flatlands, coastal paths, or mountain trails. They are built for marked trails, forest paths, muddy tracks, and even rugged terrain with loose stones. Equipped with grippy outsoles—often quite rigid—they provide excellent shock absorption, protecting your joints. Reinforcements at strategic points ensure optimal foot support and protection.
On the other hand, trail running shoes are designed specifically for running on natural terrain. Prioritising lightness and responsiveness, they enable quick acceleration and sudden direction changes. Their construction focuses on agility, featuring well-profiled soles for optimal grip on dry, wet, muddy, or rocky surfaces. More flexible than hiking boots, they are sometimes favoured by hikers who appreciate their lightweight design, though they offer less protection. Be mindful of your toes and heels when navigating rocky trails and roots!
