Buying guide: ski poles for piste skiing, ski touring and freeriding
If the time has come to complete your alpine skiing equipment with a new pair of poles, or replace the ones you bent at the end of last season, let Glisshop guide you and explore our extensive range of ski poles for piste, freeride and ski touring.
How do you choose ski poles for alpine skiing, touring, recreational skiing or racing?
Ski poles are perhaps the alpine skiing equipment that receives the least attention when it comes to choosing your kit. Yet they are indispensable to every skier and serve countless purposes throughout the day. Ski poles help you balance on the slope, propel yourself around the lift area, provide support when stationary, make stepping out of your bindings easier and help you get back on your feet after a fall. Before selecting the right pair, let us take a closer look at the different constructions and features available.
Should you choose aluminium or composite ski poles?
Although aluminium remains a competitive material that is both lightweight and affordable, it is increasingly being challenged by the latest-generation composites. These materials are even lighter and allow manufacturers to reduce shaft diameter without compromising strength. Whether made from carbon, titanium or fibreglass, composite ski poles also have the advantage of being able to flex and return to their original shape, provided their breaking point has not been reached, of course. By contrast, an aluminium pole will remain permanently bent.
Freestyle ski poles need to provide reliable support while remaining lightweight and exceptionally manoeuvrable, allowing you to link tricks at speed. For piste skiing, particularly if you enjoy speed and racing, Glisshop also offers a complete selection of streamlined racing ski poles designed to minimise aerodynamic drag.
How do you choose the correct pole length for alpine skiing, ski touring or freeriding?
The classic fixed-length ski pole is the most versatile option. Its straight, tapered rather than cylindrical profile delivers excellent aerodynamic performance and optimum balance. Simple, effective and practical, it is the familiar all-round ski pole that is equally at home on the piste and beyond. A racing pole, meanwhile, is built for high performance and features an instantly recognisable curved profile that sits close to the body at high speed and minimises air resistance. You will also find telescopic ski poles with adjustable length, making it easy to switch between piste skiing, freeriding and ski touring.
Fixed-length or telescopic, strap, tip, basket and more: the different features of a ski pole
A quick look through our ski pole range reveals the wide variety of options available from one model to another. Plastic grips on entry-level models give way to ergonomic multi-density foam handles on premium poles, delivering both comfort and a secure hold. On some models, the grip extends a long way down the shaft with a foam sleeve, allowing you to hold the pole at any height without freezing your fingers. This is an excellent feature for off-piste skiers tackling powder of varying depths. They will also appreciate wide baskets measuring over 80mm in diameter, which help prevent the poles from sinking too deeply into soft snow. Piste skiers are likely to prefer a smaller, less obtrusive and more practical basket.
It is also worth paying close attention to the pole strap, the small loop that helps prevent you from losing your pole, even in a fall. Some straps are adjustable, while others, such as the Leki system, remain secured around your glove and clip onto or detach from the pole in a second. Some poles are even equipped with a safety strap that releases your hand when subjected to significant force. However, if you are freeriding at speed through the middle of a forest, remember to remove the straps to avoid injury should your freeride ski pole catch on a branch or become trapped by another unexpected obstacle.
Which ski pole brand should you choose?
At Glisshop, we offer a wide range of ski pole brands, so everyone can find the model that suits them. Choose from the following manufacturers:
What length ski pole should you choose?
Although, in practice, your forearm should form an ideal 90-degree angle when holding the pole upside down, with the grip on the floor, your hand beneath the basket and your elbow tucked against your body, it is easier to refer to our sizing chart. You can find it in our guide: Which ski poles should you choose?
