What’s the difference between freestyle and freeride skiing?
While freestylers spend most of their time in the terrain park sending tricks, freeriders are happy tracing line in fresh powder, far away from the commotion of ski resorts, lift queues, in the great outdoors, in the middle of the mountains. This difference translates to the shape of their skis.
Freestyle skis are generally rather short, narrow and lightweight. With a twin-tip shape, the bindings are usually mounted in the middle to feel as comfortable skiing switch (backwards) or regular.
The models offered in our freeride skis sets are different. Wider and longer than standard alpine skis, they’re designed for having fun in fresh snow and being able to float in powder. Dubbed FATS in skiing lingo, they’re at least 100 mm wide at the waist.
Backcountry skiing: a mix of freestyle and freeride
Halfway between freestyle and freeride, you’ll find backcountry skis. Mixing the two disciplines, backcountry skiers or freeskiers, as they’re sometimes called, are experienced freestylers who explore remote spots to send the most beautiful tricks. They need to master technical skills and have a good understanding of avalanche risks and mountain safety.
The design of backcountry skis combines wide tips and double rocker profile to be very playful in powder. Their shape is twin-tip like freestyle skis, but the bindings are generally mounted slightly further back to facilitate skiing in virgin backcountry snow.
The popularity of the discipline compelled brands to developed skis at the crossroads of freeride and freestyle, to answer the needs of the most daring skiers.
At Glisshop, we like skiers who push their boundaries and express their passion for the mountains in nature. We’re sure you’ll enjoy the backcountry freestyle skis selection available on our online store.
How to choose your backcountry freestyle skis?
Choosing the right ski size
For your backcountry sessions, you need a long ski to remain on top on deep days and fully express your creativity. As a rule of thumb and depending on your riding style (more or less freestyle or freeride oriented), as well as your skill level, the length of your skis should range between your size and plus 10 cm.
Finding the right waist width
Once again, the waist width depends on your skiing style and abilities. Don’t rush into buying a pair of 120 mm wide FATS. To ski such sticks, you need a very good physical condition and strong legs. If don’t have the physique, your skis may make you pay the price for it. Sometimes, it can be a good option to opt for a more reasonable waist width, providing better manoeuvrability. Simply put, choosing the right skis for your needs and level will guarantee you have a good time out in the backcountry. Don’t worry, very accessible and ultra-versatile models are available. Our experts are here to guide your choice.
Choosing the right bindings
There are multiple types of ski bindings. Backcountry skis require strong bindings, whether they’re meant to ski lift accessible off-piste terrain or enjoy more remote spots in touring mode. Get the best advice from our ski team via phone or stop by our shop. If you already know what you need, you’re sure to find the right bindings on our online store!
What are the best backcountry freestyle ski brands?
Faction: an iconic brand available at Glisshop
Let’s kick things off with Faction. This brand’s line up consists primarily of freestyle/freeride and backcountry skis. More noticeably the Mana and Prodigy ranges.
Blackcrows backcountry skis
Independent brand Blackcrows is a staple when it comes to backcountry skiing. Deeply rooted in the Chamonix valley, at the foot of the Mont Blanc, the brand manages to produce unique skis, combining style and performance. Since its birth in 2006, numerous lines have been developed, always with the goal of offering playful, reliable and efficient sticks. You’ll be happy to know Glisshop stocks Blackcrows skis!
Camox model
The Blackcrows Camox is an all-terrain ski. With its freestyle DNA, this very playful ski will follow you everywhere. Aimed at intermediate to advanced level riders, it’ll help you progress and take your skiing to the next level!
Atris model
The Blackcrows Atris big mountain ski was first released in 2014. Its 108 mm wide waist, balanced stiffness and nice front tip width make it manoeuvrable and float well. In addition, its traditional camber enables to handle hardpack with composure. A very effective ski that will satisfy the most demanding skiers.
Anima model
The Blackcrows Anima is THE epitome of a fat. With its 115 mm at the waist, it’s cut for deep conditions and offers optimal floatability in powder. Its sidecut provides great stability and allow it to perform on hardpack.
Atomic backcountry skis
Bent range
What a beautiful ski line. The unique design is the result of the work of Chris Benchetler, freerider, surfer, climber, and artist. The Atomic Bent backcountry ski is in the image of the skier who designed it: versatile. It’ll take you everywhere, away from groomed runs and where pillows aren’t meant for sleeping! In addition, it remains stable on groomers and at ease in the park. A fun and nimble ski with one of the best performance/accessibility ratios on the market.
K2 backcountry skis
Reckoner range
American brand K2 is known for its playful skis cut for the cold powder found in US mountains. Very playful, the Reckoner 102, 112 or 122 mm will offer riders the freedom to choose between a more manoeuvrable ski or a powder gun.
Rossignol backcountry skis
Blackops range
Rossignol’s Blackops range has been designed to meet the eternal need for freedom of backcountry riders.
With its 118 mm wide waist, the Blackops Gamer is the widest in the line. It offers extreme float, as well as insane playfulness and performance! The Blackops 98 and 92 provide undeniable versatility between groomers, park and powder.
