What’s the difference between freestyle and freeride skiing?
While freestylers spend most of their time in the terrain park sending tricks, freeriders are happy tracing line in fresh powder, far away from the commotion of ski resorts, lift queues, in the great outdoors, in the middle of the mountains. This difference translates to the shape of their skis.
Freestyle skis are generally rather short, narrow and lightweight. With a twin-tip shape, the bindings are usually mounted in the middle to feel as comfortable skiing switch (backwards) or regular.
The models offered in our freeride skis sets are different. Wider and longer than standard alpine skis, they’re designed for having fun in fresh snow and being able to float in powder. Dubbed FATS in skiing lingo, they’re at least 100 mm wide at the waist.
Backcountry skiing: a mix of freestyle and freeride
Halfway between freestyle and freeride, you’ll find backcountry skis. Mixing the two disciplines, backcountry skiers or freeskiers, as they’re sometimes called, are experienced freestylers who explore remote spots to send the most beautiful tricks. They need to master technical skills and have a good understanding of avalanche risks and mountain safety.
The design of backcountry skis combines wide tips and double rocker profile to be very playful in powder. Their shape is twin-tip like freestyle skis, but the bindings are generally mounted slightly further back to facilitate skiing in virgin backcountry snow.

How to choose your backcountry freestyle skis?
Choosing the right ski size
For your backcountry sessions, you need a long ski to remain on top on deep days and fully express your creativity. As a rule of thumb and depending on your riding style (more or less freestyle or freeride oriented), as well as your skill level, the length of your skis should range between your size and plus 10 cm.
Finding the right waist width
Once again, the waist width depends on your skiing style and abilities. Don’t rush into buying a pair of 120 mm wide FATS. To ski such sticks, you need a very good physical condition and strong legs. If don’t have the physique, your skis may make you pay the price for it. Sometimes, it can be a good option to opt for a more reasonable waist width, providing better manoeuvrability.
